Having been pushed to the periphery on his sophomore solo album, Kick Off Your Muddy Boots, Moody Blues drummer Graeme Edge wrestled back control for the follow-up, Paradise Ballroom. Edge insisted on co-writing all the tracks with Gurvitz (he had contributed only three on his debut), and promoted Paul Gurvitz to lead vocalist.
This resulted in a much more coherent set, and a far funkier one, throwing the spotlight directly onto the rhythm section, bolstered by guesting Traffic percussionist Rebop Kwaku Baah.
Of course, Gurvitz’s lead guitar still splays across the album, but so does a full horn section, as the set sashays around disco, reggae, Motown, funk, and soul, the upbeat songs counterbalanced by gorgeous, introspective numbers. The discofied adaptation of “Everybody Needs Somebody” is inspired, the breezy “In the Light of Night” a delight, and the funky title track a soul-filled extravaganza.
Line-up:
- Adrian Gurvitz / vocals, guitars
- Paul Gurvitz / bass, vocals
- Graeme Edge / drums
Lost in Space

Changin' cells frome day I was born
But I'm still the same though the meat has changed
Something's holding me together that's for sure
I find myself suspended in a vacuum
A vacuum that goes either way
But there must be something else to it
When I see the truth I see it with my own imagery
It's my brain lying, trying to make me see,
That the truths is so big that it runs eternity
And small enough to fit inside me
Far away past a star into the void inside of me
Or smaller past the atoms that have nothing inside
Just the same as a car or a leaf or a star
Cannot move without command
Something moves me and without it I'd be no more living
Than a hole in the sand
Hold my hand feel it's warm touch from the fire inside
Hold my heart feel it's beating how I can't decide
I don't control my sleeping or when I dream away
But there must be something to it
For I wake up everyday
The Graeme Edge Band's song "Lost in Space" is a contemplation about the human experience and the mysteries of existence. The lyrics describe the singer's feeling of being suspended in space amidst constant physical and cellular changes, yet remaining fundamentally the same. The notion of something holding the singer together speaks to the idea that there is a core essence, a 'soul,' which persists through one's physical form. The lines "But there must be something else to it / 'Cause the sun comes to me every day" suggest that there is a grander meaning or force at work beyond our understanding.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of truth and perception. The singer suggests that the truth is both infinite and infinitely small, and that our capacity to understand it is limited by our own perception. The imagery of being lost in space far beyond the reaches of stars and atoms, while also containing that truth inside oneself, speaks to the paradoxes of the human experience. The lines "Hold my hand feel it's warm touch from the fire inside / Hold my heart feel it's beating how I can't decide" suggest that our bodies and emotions are not solely under our control, but rather are guided by forces beyond our understanding.
