You Can't Be Too Strong
by Graham Parker

Did they tear it out with talons of steel
And give you a shot, so that you wouldn't feel?
And washed it away as if it wasn't real?

It's just a mistake I won't have to face
Don't give it a name, don't give it a place
Don't give it a chance, it's lucky in a way

It must have felt strange to find me inside you
I hadn't intended to stay
If you want to keep it right, put it to sleep at night
Squeeze it until it could say

You can't be too strong
You can't be too strong
You can't be too strong
Can't be too strong
You decide what's wrong

Well I ain't gonna cry, I'm gonna rejoice
And shout myself dry and go see the boys
They'll laugh when I say I left it overseas

Yeah babe, I know it gets dark, down by Luna Park
But everybody else is squeezing out a spark
That happened in the heat, somewhere in the dark, in the dark

The doctor gets nervous completing the service
He's all rubber gloves and no head
Yes, he fumbles the light switch, it's just another minor hitch
Wishes to God he was dead

But you can't be too strong
You can't be too strong
You can't be too strong
Can't be too strong
You decide what's wrong

Can't be too hard
Too tough, too rough
Too right, too wrong
And you can't be too strong
Baby can't be too right

Shame it does not get more air time. Were it a Tom Petty or Springsteen song it would have been world famous.

Ghastly_Grinner

I dont think the media would allow it to get airtime

This is a song about an abortion..... listen to the lyrics.....

@Tony Bates It's just cowardice. I saw him in concert and he's a lighthearted comedic guy not looking to make waves or stand for anything. He doesn't want to have to defend this song so he pretends it's not about what it IS about. Plus if you come out against abortion, Bruce and all these other lefty D-Bags won't invite you to their cocktail parties.

I read the link.
Is it possible to be a liberal and anti-abortion? I don't see why not. Toeing the party line for the sake of it is silly. Although Parker sings "you decide what's wrong", it does seem like an anti-abortion song to me. How else do you interpret lines like "it's just a mistake you won't have to face" and the part about the doctor wishing he was dead? Perhaps he's changed his mind on the subject, in which case all he has to do is say so - it isn't a crime to realise you don't feel the same as you used to about certain things.

@John Decker thanks for that edifying link wherein Parker defines the intent of his song ... Or maybe he's back pedaling and rationalizing to suit the execrable woke ethos. What a let down about the man. The song is much greater than its creator.
