Brass Buttons
Gram Parsons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes
Warm evenings, pale mornings, bottle of blues
And the tiny golden pins that she wore up in her hair
Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes

My mind was young until she grew
My secret thoughts known only by the few
It was a dream much to real
To be leaned against too long
All the time I think she knew

Her words still dance inside my head
Her comb still lies beside my bed
And the sun comes up without her
It just doesn't know she's gone
Ooh, but I remember everything she said

Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes
Warm evenings, pale mornings, bottle of blues

And the tiny golden pins that she wore up in her hair
Brass buttons, green silks and silver shoes

Overall Meaning

The song "Brass Buttons" by Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels is a melancholic reflection on lost love and remembrance. The lyrics describe a woman wearing brass buttons, green silks, and silver shoes, with tiny golden pins in her hair. The singer's mind was once youthful, but was aged by the experience of losing this woman. The memories of her still linger, with her words echoing in his head and her comb still lying beside his bed. The singer acknowledges that he leaned on her too much and that she probably knew it, and now that she is gone, the sun rises without her.

The repetition of the opening line creates a sense of nostalgia and longing, as if the singer is looking back on this woman with fondness and appreciation. The contrast between warm evenings and pale mornings suggests a fleeting sense of comfort and hope followed by a cold and difficult reality. The brass buttons, green silks, and silver shoes are a symbol of the woman's elegance and beauty, while the tiny golden pins in her hair represent the intricacy and detail of her personality. Overall, the song conveys a sense of loss and regret, but also a deep appreciation for the impact that this woman had on the singer's life.

The lines "And the sun comes up without her, it just doesn't know she's gone" is classic, heartbreaking.

First time I heard this song was on Poco's Crazy Eyes album. Richie Furay sung lead. It was one of the best songs on the album. Gram's voice on this is so pure and sweet; like he's sitting in your living room and singing just to you. I hope he is in heaven.

What a great songwriter and singer Gram is. His voice is beautiful

I like many singers, country music, and other genres, but there is no other voice I love more than Grams. I could listen to him all day.

This MUST be on any conscious person's "short list" for best songs of all time. It don't get any better than this, and the production value on the album still holds its own against all modern work. Lovely expression of loss?, love?, loneliness?, etc...

you speaketh the truth. An amazing record of unparelled beauty. i'd like to give the pedal steel player a big, sloppy kiss. I must admit that I wouldnt know who Gram was if not for Evan Dando's cover or Stanley Booth's book.

Mark Mullins

One of the most poignant ballads ever written.
