Why Don't You
Gramophonedzie (Green Money Remix) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You had plenty money, 1922
You let other women make a fool of you
Why don't you do right, like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

You're sittin' there and wonderin' what it's all about
You ain't got no money, they will put you out
Why don't you do right, like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

If you had prepared twenty years ago
You wouldn't be a-wanderin' from door to door
Why don't you do right, like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

I fell for your jivin' and I took you in
Now all you got to offer me's a drink of gin
Why don't you do right, like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

Why don't you do right, like some other men do?
Like some other men do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gramophonedzie's song Why Don’t You are a woman's lament about a man who has wasted his money on other women, leaving her in a state of desperation. The song opens with a flashback to 1922, when the man had plenty of money but allowed other women to make a fool of him. The woman, who is addressing him, asks him to do right and get her some money too. She is tired of sitting around wondering what it's all about while he is unable to provide for her.

The chorus is the woman's call to action, imploring the man to get out of here and get her some money too. She tells him that if he had prepared twenty years ago, he wouldn't be wandering from door to door. She fell for his jivin' and took him in, but now all he has to offer her is a drink of gin. She repeats the refrain of why don't you do right, like some other men do? like some other men do.

The song is a commentary on the economic and social realities of the time, when women were expected to depend on men for financial support, and men were judged by their ability to provide for women. The woman in the song is frustrated with the man's lack of ambition and unwillingness to do what other men do to provide for their partners. The song has been covered by many artists over the years, including Peggy Lee and Jessica Rabbit.

I like that it was an encouraging song, instead of the demeaning that it could have been. The guy wasn't mocked for having toys or games or a love of old music. It was just "clean your room and get a job"! Plain and simple.
