Known for iconic rock hits such as the number ones "We're An American Band" and their cover version of "The Loco-Motion", the band initially consisted of Mark Farner (vocals, guitar), Mel Schacher (bass) and Don Brewer (drums), with Craig Frost (keyboards) joining in 1972. During their career, the group has released 14 studio albums and their career sales total over 25 million records sold, including 10 million records sold in 1970 alone.

The band split in 1977 and reunited in 1980, splitting again in 1983. Since reuniting in 1996 they have remained active, although Farner left the band in 1999. The group currently consists of Max Carl (vocals), Bruce Kulick (guitar), Mel Schacher (bass), Tim Cashion (keyboards), and Don Brewer (drums, vocals).

Despite their name, their music is far from the style known as "funk"; the name "Grand Funk Railroad" is a play on Michigan's "Grand Trunk Western Railroad" line, and it was chosen before "funk" had become the name of a music genre. In 1968, suburban Michigan teens Don Brewer and Mark Farner quit Terry Knight and The Pack and recruited ? and The Mysterians bass player Mel Schacher to form a power trio inspired by contemporary rock n roll.

Early in their career, they headlined a much hyped free concert in Hyde Park, wowing the audience whilst being virtually unknown in the U.K. They also opened for Led Zeppelin in Michigan, their home state. Originally produced and managed by former band leader Terry Knight who brought the group to Capitol records in 1969, they split from Knight in 1972 after money issues left the group nearly bankrupt despite massive commercial success which began after an successful appearance at the Atlanta Pop Festival.

After releasing 12 albums on Capitol (10 platinum), they intend for their final release to be Born To Die in 1975. They actually reunited & recorded one last effort in 1976 with Frank Zappa called "Good Singin' Good Playin' " and then called it quits.

Farner released two solo albums, Mel & Don recorded as Flint with Craig before Craig joined [aritst]Bob Seger's band. In 1981 Mark Farner & Don reformed the band without Mel and released a song on the animated Heavy Metal soundtrack and new album Grand Funk Lives. They toured until 1983.

In 1996 all three original members reunited for a summer tour in which they played to over 250,000 people, and a slate of Bosnian relief dates in 1997 including several TV performances. In 1998 they did a 65+ date tour listed as one of the 10 top grossing tours of the year. In 1999 Capitol issued a 3 disc box set called "Thirty Years Of Funk" 1969-1999, including recent recordings made in 1997.

Original Grand Funk Railroad members Don & Mel still tour and write new material to this day although the group have seen various line up changes, including the absence of original lead singer Mark Farner. Mark is active with his New band Nr'G. They have released 3 CD's since 1999 with For The People released in 2006.

Was just reading that Mark Farner wrote 90% of songs and was their singer. He and the band were ripped off badly by their producer/manager whom they trusted. GFRR did not make that much money and they were great!!! The producer/manager, Terry Knight, was murdered by his daughter's bf. He was 61. Mark Farner is alive and has produced some Christian music.

This song was playing in a 99 cent store today and I began singing with it. My wife said she was embarrassed because I can't sing. I told her the song brings back memories of the spring of 1975 for me. I was in junior high and was scared to talk to a couple of girls at my school. This song was perfect for my teen age angst. I listened to Grand Funk in junior high and high school. This is my all time favourite song of theirs. I saw them live in 1996 and again in 2003 and was very disappointed that they did not play this song at either concert. All of their songs were great and true to their 70s greatness. Not hearing Bad Time was disappointing.

Damn Right. Grand Funk taught the people of America some serious things about themselves as a whole. Grand Funk was a frontrunner in so many areas. I remember them first as a long-haired hippie fairly hard rock band that everyone's parents would have nothing to do with -- no way, Jose! AND THEN, this song, Bad Time, hit the air and all our mothers were singing along with the latest Grand Funk song the following month. It was a 180 degree flip in reality. That is what I witnessed and what I remember because it was truly a huge social movement taking place in itself and it cracked the ice in so many other soon-to-be-following areas socially speaking.

My favorite of theirs, this is such a great song, wish it were a bit longer, I’ve loved it since I was a kid. I’m surprised an r&b group back then like The Spinners, The O’Jays, Blackbyrds, or The Dramatics didn’t cover this, with a softer guitar solo. I got to see Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, The Who, Aerosmith, Reo Speedwagon, Neil Young, Molly Hatchet, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers & Lynyrd Skynyrd before plane crash. David Cassidy from Partridge Family TV Show. Country singer Alan Jackson. The crowd went crazy when some bands said HELLO BUFFALO. Some 70s concerts were crazy because lack of Security. Then again how do control 80,000 fans. It sucks people hate Buffalo because of all the snow we get. True Lake Erie dumps 10-12 feet every winter. Buffalo Bars are open till 4am. Bars open so late because Buffalo has a hugh IRISH population. 1 good thing were called Miami of the North cause we get a lot of 90 degree days in summer. OH YAH Always WHITE CHRISTMAS IN BUFFALO

I'm 56 years old and it's hard to believe so much time has passed since these songs were new.Do they sound just as good to young persons as they still do for us?What I still cannot get quite used to is that when these songs are currently taped being performed by the origional artists ,they're all old guys singing them.There was "THEN" and "NOW",and what happened in between seems to have never ocurred at all.Yeah...a long strange trip indeed !

Grand Funk taught the people of America some serious things about themselves as a whole. Grand Funk was a frontrunner in so many areas. I remember them first as a long-haired hippie fairly hard rock band that everyone's parents would have nothing to do with -- no way, Jose! AND THEN, this song, Bad Time, hit the air and all our mothers were singing along with the latest Grand Funk song the following month. It was a 180 degree flip in reality. That is what I witnessed and what I remember because it was truly a huge social movement taking place in itself and it cracked the ice in so many other soon-to-be-following areas socially speaking.

This song played in my head nearly every day in 2005, when I plotted to date a co-worker 15 years younger than me and who had less than no interest. Years later, married and happy beyond measure, I heard it again and thought of my son who's heart was broken by a long-time girlfriend. Good songs and their messages stand the test of time.
