How many times have I sat right here
And seen that skyline at twilight
And told myself I'm gonna be alright
But at the last light after sayin' goodbye
You can't rest at night inside your head
Yeah, at that last light after sayin' goodbye
Now just how, how many times
How many times have I sat right here
And again that skyline and again that twilight
And again tell myself I'm gonna be alright
But at that last light after saying goodbye
You can't rest at night inside your head
Yeah, at that last light after sayin' goodbye
It's such a sad sight 'cause of what we said
[Incomprehensible]
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
In Grandaddy's song "Goodbye," the artist reflects on a familiar scene, one where he has sat countless times to admire the beauty of the skyline at twilight. The scenery offers a sense of peace and comfort, and in moments of distress, he has used this view to calm himself and convince himself that he will be alright. However, there is a contrasting feeling that emerges in the afterglow of saying goodbye to someone. The emotions that are difficult to contain become heavy, insomniac, and uncomfortable with self-doubt in one's mind, and it changes the entire feeling of the experience.
Moreover, the song's lyrics eventually delve into the cycle of the recurring scene, which showcases the difficulty in moving beyond hurt and pain. The lyrics "again that skyline and again that twilight, And again tell myself I'm gonna be alright," emphasize trying to move forward but continuing to return to the exact same situation that caused the pain. The repetition highlights that despite trying to convince oneself that everything will be alright, it's difficult to move on from the pain and sadness.
