He's Simple He's Dumb He's The Pilot
Grandaddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Adrift again 2000 man
You lost your maps,
You lost the plans
Did you hear them yell,
Land damn it land?
You say you can't
Well I hope you can
I hope you can

How's it goin 2000 man?
Welcome back to solid ground my friend
I heard all your controls were jammed
Well it's just nice to have you back again

But I guess they still don't understand
And they can never understand
And they said go find 2000 man
And they said tell him we've got new plans
But instead I'm here to tell you friend

I believe they want you to give in
Are you giving in 2000 man?
(Did you love this world
And did this world not love you?)

Are you giving in 2000 man?
Don't give in 2000 man

Overall Meaning

The song "He's Simple He's Dumb He's The Pilot" by Grandaddy is a poignant and melancholic piece that was released in 2000. The song is about a man who is lost at sea and is struggling to find his bearings. He has lost all of his maps and plans and is wandering aimlessly, hoping to find a way back to solid ground. The lyrics are ambiguous but appear to be a metaphor for the struggles and uncertainties of life.

The opening line "Adrift again 2000 man" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The phrase “2000 man” is likely a reference to the new millennium, which could represent a new beginning or a time of turbulence and change. The lyrics also express a sense of urgency, as the man is urged to find land before it's too late. The repetition of the phrase "I hope you can" emphasizes the desperation of the situation.

One interpretation of the song is that it is a commentary on the human condition. The man lost at sea could represent the struggles of everyday life, and the chorus "don't give in 2000 man" could be a reminder to keep fighting and not lose hope. The song suggests that even though we may feel lost and alone at times, we should never give up and always strive to find our way back home.

While I may have not listened to grandaddy during the 2000's, 2010's will always make me think about them very fondly during my formative years. Especially, this album.

At the time, I moved into a town after promising a friend I would come back to see her again like old times. I kept that promise til the end. During that time, I stumbled across the band thanks to AM 180, featured in 28 days later and Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe series which I used to watch religiously.

Yet after living in that town for 2 years, there was nothing really going for me anymore. I failed my exams multiple times, most of my friends left for uni (including her), no family, as well my crippling existential emptiness and regrets became more uncontrollable, amoung other things. What was once a town filled with hopeful optimism and endless possibilities, became nihilistic, depressing and crippling. I felt I didn't belonged there, constantly feeling lost without any directions...only thing I had there was my job.

I used to work at a polo club, a goal judge back then. Wasn't the best job nor the worst, but it paid decently. My ipod nano would play this album on repeat, whenever I was working there or commuting to work.

I remember vividly during my shifts, the vast patches of green fields, watching the birds migrating in the clear blue skies as the matches began, the congregation of horses charging aggressively towards me at the goal post, then trying my best not to turn my back around and run away as they got closer. The dirty labcoats and heavy cricket helmet I had to wear, while sweating under the unbearable summer heat. Rich polo players arguing over penalties and goals, while letting thier dogs frolick around with each other on the field's sidelines, without a care in the world. The unending amount of times my bike tyre's would get punctures commuting to work and heading back home. And just getting lost in my own day dreams as these songs carried me away from my mundane and bleak nonsensical life.

Honestly, sophtware slump is a masterpiece. I don't think there's anything like this album. Something that just cannot be replicated. And for that these memories will be ingrained in my mind alomg with these songs

Gosh, back in the early 2000's when my drinking was heavy and stupid. Come home at night wasted and put this on the headphones, all nonsense would melt away, I was transported to a soundscape, albeit depressing. Phenomenal album. To this day this album is one of a kind.

@andrusman100

Hey I dont know how you find this masterpiece back then...i got lucky and found it by accident, but i want you to know your not the only person whos met this cycle and found this song to help them through it.

@Nullius_in_verba

A sublime chant, an outstanding lament, two thousand shivers on the skin...the melody is an electronic masterpiece

@felipevallori6606

What a master piece. I've had this album in my shelving for 23 years and never payed much attention to this song. Getting old makes you change your perspective of music, leaving behind heavy guitars...this sounds like King Crimson or Pink Floyd!

@alanalain4884

Little "Manfred Mann" Inspired seems more like it maybe, no ? (Especially the background music distant layer, typical of Manfred Mann in some of their pieces). Don't know King Crimson though, I'll look...

@jasonshields9443

I've loved this album all those 23 years, but man, it is cool hearing of someone just "discovering" it these days. WTG, you!

@Jukebocks

@Jason Shields I'm 26 but only discovered grandaddy last year, nice to know people still care this much about new people finding their favs

@noeljohnson868

It's kind of re-assuring that all over the world there are pockets of people who love this, love what it means and love what it means to them, 20 years on...although it's probably been a part of their lives for each and every day...

@seantynan1

Yes, it brings back memories for me. Just the new days of the millennium. Working for a sophtware company, funnily enough, that went bust during the tech bubble. Ah, happy days.
