Hewletts Daughter
Grandaddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hewlett's daughter,
Loved her father,
And I think she loved me too,
For a little while.

Hewlett's daughter,
I forgot her,
Now I'm treating water
And waste at night.

High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and glaciers.

I spy below the mess
And measure the pressure
Where sofas float on roads
And somebody stole your guns,
Well sir I'm the only one
To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son.

High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and dressers.

With crash united sewn
On all of my dress shirts
They fire fell the roads,
And somebody stole your guns,
Well sir I'm the only one

To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son.

Overall Meaning

The song "Hewlett's Daughter" by Grandaddy is a melancholic reflection on lost love and missed opportunities. The singer speaks of a woman named Hewlett's daughter whom he loved and who he believed loved him in return. However, the relationship was short-lived, and the singer moved on and forgot about her. Now, years later, he finds himself stuck in a stagnant life, the water and waste of his mundane existence, and he reflects on what could have been with Hewlett's daughter.

The lyrics are filled with imagery that contrasts the bleakness of the singer's life with the beauty and majesty of the natural world. He sings of ice shelves and glaciers, and of looking down from above at the mess below. He also references stolen guns and crashes, creating an ominous sense of danger and violence lurking beneath the surface of the song.

The refrain of "I should have been your son" is particularly poignant, as it speaks to the singer's longing for a stronger father figure and the desire to be loved and appreciated by someone. The song is a bittersweet reminder of the paths not taken and the missed opportunities that can haunt us long after they are gone.

It's beautiful. I don't really care what it's about. It has a warm calmness that just streams through ones body in the chorus. I love it

@breadbutt

just short of seventeen years old and still a fantastic song

I shouldn't admit to this, but when I'm being really cynical I begrudge other musicians’ success. I'm so glad a record label noticed Jason Lytle and Grandaddy's talent so this masterpiece of a record could get made and given to the world. I feel like there would have been a huge void in my life without it. There's just something so honest about it

@FerretPercussion

just a kind reminder the only success there is for musicians is in creating the kind of art you always wanted to create.

Its a pretty attainable goal once you figure out what that success sounds like to you, and its completely separate from how other people create that success for themselves.
