How It's On
Grandaddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is how it always starts
All order falls apart
Okay, so who put this key in the mix?

Things were stable yesterday
But now they're blown away
Oh shit, I can't let them see me like this
Nothing sweet
Nothing nice
Nothing kiss, only fights

Nothing clear
Nothing bright
Nothing I'll feel tonight

Nothing great
Nothing good
Nothing is as it should

Nothing rad
Nothing right
Nothing I'll feel tonight

This is how it always starts
Dumb choices from the heart
Oh shit, I can't let them see me like this

Nothing sweet
Nothing nice
Nothing kiss, only fights

Nothing clear
Nothing bright
Nothing I'll feel tonight

Nothing great
Nothing good
Nothing is as it should

Nothing rad

Nothing right
Nothing I'll feel tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "This Is How It Always Starts" by Grandaddy tells the story of a person who feels like their life is falling apart. The lyrics suggest that things were stable in the past, but now everything has been blown away. The line "Okay, so who put this key in the mix?" implies that someone else has caused this chaos, perhaps by introducing something unexpected or unwanted into the situation.

The singer is ashamed of their current state and doesn't want anyone to see them like this. The repetition of "Oh shit, I can't let them see me like this" further emphasizes this feeling of embarrassment and vulnerability. The chorus repeats the phrase "nothing sweet, nothing nice, nothing kiss, only fights" to suggest that the situation is bleak and that there is no hope for a happy outcome. The list of negative adjectives that follows in each verse ("nothing clear, nothing bright, nothing great, nothing good, nothing rad, nothing right") serves to reinforce this idea.

Overall, the song seems to be about feeling trapped in a situation that is spiraling out of control. Despite the singer's initial disbelief that things could change so suddenly, they seem resigned to the fact that this is just how life is. The final line of the song "Nothing I'll feel tonight" suggests that the singer has given up hope for any kind of positive emotions in the near future.

This is my current theme song. It resonates to my core.

"Now that the "k" is in place
Where the "c" used to be
It seems that I'm ceasing to be
In a season of the old me
I wouldn't trade my place
I got no reason to be
Weathered and withering
Like in the season of the old me
Bust the lock off the front door
Once you're outside you won't want to hide anymore
Light the light on the front porch
Once it's on you're never wanna turn it off anymore
And now it's on"

*Fuck off last 5 years!!!*

where the fuck did I hear this song originally? Someone was just using it as a sound on TikToc and I was like ‘hey wait a minute…’

Now here I am. I know every word*. The whole song is burnt in to my memory like I was listening to it all through high school. I *probably was*. But *where did I hear it originally!?!?

This is totally my style of music too. Or at least it was. These days I’m more in to low roar, but that’s a pretty natural progression given the time that has passed.

I can’t find this as a song in a video game or a movie anywhere. But I did live in california near Modesto back then. Same area code and everything. So maybe the radio? But I didn’t listen to the radio much.

This is going to bug me forever.

I found this album in a one dollar bin at my local record store, dear God it was the greatest find of my life. I've listened to it religiously for the past few weeks. from what I've heard they aren't together anymore, that's such a shame, i would love to see them live

One dollar bin. Both saddened and optimistic about this tbh — sad cos this amazing band have been relegated to such status; happy cos maybe that means it’ll reach more people where it belongs :)

11 year old comment. Something is very kool about that.

I found Steve from Blues Clues album in the dollar bin. It's worth more than that if you're a Flaming Lips fan

I once heard this song outside a cafe and it literally haunted me for six months. I couldn't remember the lyrics but I remembered the rhythms. Then one day I remembered enough to google it (yes after months had gone by) and was able to find it again, after hearing it for maybe just a minute or so I knew it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. I love this band so much.
