Levitz
Grandaddy Lyrics

Right to say that I ain't showing up
I've got pictures at my home
And doors that transform me alone
Sunny days should leave a message on my phone
I don't think I'm gonna miss you much
For I've got dials and knobs soft to the touch
Converted into static hum
Sunny days should leave a message on my phone
Ode to sleep perchance to dream
To live again those joyous scenes
The laughter and the follies that
Are locked away inside my head
The lyrics of Grandaddy's song Levitz express a sense of detachment and disillusionment with the outside world. The first two lines serve as a contradiction, stating that while the singer is not actively participating in their surroundings, they are not completely withdrawing either. They are physically present, but emotionally absent. The pictures at home and the doors that transform the singer alone suggest that they find solace in solitude, and perhaps value their private space more than the company of others. The sunny days that should leave a message on their phone imply that the world is trying to reach out, but they are not interested in answering.
The next part of the verse takes on a slightly more bitter tone, as the singer asserts that they will not miss the person they are addressing. This could be a lover, friend or business associate, but whoever they are, the singer seems to have grown tired of their company. The dials and knobs they mention could be a metaphor for the music equipment they use to tune out the world, or they could be literal objects that the singer has invested their interest in, instead of people. The lectures that will become converted into a static hum suggest that whatever the person they are leaving behind has said to them has become meaningless, and they are ready to move on. However, the chorus with its repeated reference to sunny days suggests an underlying sense of melancholy, as if the singer knows that they may be missing out on something important.
The final line of the verse, "Ode to sleep perchance to dream, to live again those joyous scenes," suggests that the singer is not completely content with their current situation. They are not living in the joyful scenes they remember from the past, but they are dreaming of them at night. The laughter and follies that are locked away inside their head imply that the singer is nostalgic for a time when things were simpler, and they were not so alienated from the world.
