Grandaddy Lyrics

I'd rather not speak right now,
I'm remembering... something.
Most typically my dreams are dreadfully boring,
Therefore I go to these places just to
See the girls...
With clothes like she wore,
With smells like hers,
With handwriting like hers...
You wrote me little letters and,
You brought me lunch that time,
At my work and that poem you left,
On my windshield wrapped in plastic,
To protect it from the rain.
Protected from the rain (several times)
The opening lines of Grandaddy's song "Protected From the Rain" introduce us to a character who is reluctant to speak, simultaneously evoking a sense of isolation and introspection, as though the singer has retreated so deeply into their own mind that they are almost incapable of interacting with the world around them. The line "I'm remembering... something" reinforces this impression, suggesting a protagonist grappling with a fragmented or elusive memory.
However, despite the singer's apparent emotional distance, it quickly becomes apparent that they are searching for connection in the world around them. Specifically, they are looking for traces of a lost lover - someone whose presence still lingers in the sensory details and personal artifacts they encounter. The lyrics evoke a sense of yearning for someone who is no longer present, but whose absence still resonates in the singer's surroundings.
This theme is encapsulated in the final verses, which hint at a prior relationship with someone who brought small, meaningful gestures into the singer's life - "little letters," "lunch," "a poem...wrapped in plastic to protect it from the rain." The chorus, with its repetition of the phrase "Protected From the Rain," emphasizes the idea of preserving the past, of holding onto fragments of memory to protect them from being washed away by the tumult of life.
Overall, "Protected From the Rain" presents a complex, bittersweet reflection on memory, love, and loss. It invites the listener to empathize with the singer's search for connection, while also acknowledging the ambivalence and pain inherent in holding onto past experiences.

Oversword
Their music is art, most music nowadays is drivel, no emotion. I'm glad they're not well heard of because then their art would be trivialised and lost. Probably my favourite band.

This track has everything I love about Jason's songrwiting. I'm not sure how he creates this stuff. But it's soooo great. I don't care about final production, I just love how the music hits me.
