At 17, he relocated to Montreal, QC to attend university, and began working in nightclubs cleaning tables and DJing. He started writing music at this time, incorporating the unique blend of sounds he grew up surrounded by. He started experimenting with music production and rapping in 2013, and dropped out of school to relocate to Los Angeles and pursue music full time.
Adopting the Grandson moniker while living in LA, he dove deeply into rock influences such as Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, and Led Zeppelin, while also listening to rap/R&B music emerging out of Toronto and alternative acts such as Twenty One Pilots and Hiatus Kaiyote. He found a small community of musicians to work and perform with here in Los Angeles. The live tries to create a frantic, mosh pit-inducing cathartic release of energy for concert-goers, influenced by early punk and grunge music.
Searching for his voice and for meaning in today’s divisive, chaotic world, Grandson confronts the most pressing issues of his generation through his songwriting, such as financial inequality, governmental and environmental accountability, and social justice, giving these topics a soundtrack with a genuine sense of urgency and frustration. The music also touches on adolescence, relationships, and the insecurities and difficulties of growing up through your 20s.

Until I'm too late to do anything
A screen glows in a dark room
Laptop talk of a change that never came
Oh no, no, no
So console me
Just what to do and how to fix it, I'm lonely
All of my best friends
Like to go and get fucked up
Then they talk about all the lives they never got to live
Oh, they're still waiting for some sort of invitation
It's never coming along, oh no, you'll get just what you give
Getting high with your best friends
I'm just reading about flaws that I didn't know I had
Watching ads for things I didn't know I need
Oh no, no, no
Pour a drink just to stop the shakes
Blowing smoke until my eyes bleed
Mm, mm, mm, mm
Oh console me
Just what to do and how to fix it, I'm lonely
Sitting in this crowded room
All of my best friends
Like to go and get fucked up
Then they talk about all the lives they never got to live
Oh, they're still waiting for some sort of invitation
It's never coming along, oh no, you'll get just what you give
Getting high with your best friends
Sometimes you gotta leave that city to love that city and start all over again
But it doesn't look so pretty to get your hands dirty and start all over again
You gotta leave that city to love that city or else you might get trapped
Oh, you might get trapped
Just like all of my
Just like all of my
Ooh!
Oh, just like all of my best friends
Like to go and get fucked up
Then they talk about all the lives they never got to live
Oh, they're still waiting for some sort of invitation
It's never coming along, oh no, you'll get just what you give
Getting high with your best friends
In the song "Best Friends" by Grandson, the lyrics delve into the feeling of being stuck in a moment and unable to move past it. The opening lyrics, "I never learned from my mistakes, until I'm too late to do anything," hint at the singer's inability to see his own flaws and fix them in time. Instead, he turns to his laptop and seemingly endless amounts of information and advertising, trying to find a way out of his situation.
The chorus highlights the frustration of being surrounded by friends who are focused solely on getting drunk and high, rather than pursuing the lives they want. They "talk about all the lives they never got to live" but never take action to change it. The line "you'll get just what you give" emphasizes that if you only focus on drinking and partying, you'll never achieve your dreams.
The final verse brings up the idea of leaving a city to start fresh and discover love for it again. This is juxtaposed with the idea of getting "trapped" in the city, a metaphor for getting trapped in a cycle of destructive behavior. The song ultimately ends on the repetition of "just like all of my best friends," underscoring the fact that the singer relates to these struggles just as much as his friends do.
Overall, "Best Friends" is a commentary on the difficulties of being young and feeling stuck in a cycle of destructive behavior. The lyrics highlight the importance of taking action and pursuing the lives we want, rather than solely relying on temporary escapes like getting drunk or high.
