Deep Water
Grapefruit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Torn apart I sit and wonder and think of a way to see you
Been so long since you been gone and I just wanna be near you

I'm swimmin' in the deep water
And I really don't think that I ought to be

Understand I was the man you wanted to be somebody
I could be too and more for you but without you I am no one

I'm swimmin' in the deep water
And I really don't think that I ought to be

If you want to help someone, if you want to save me
Come on, come on, come on, come on do it,
Can you hear me beggin' you, show a man some mercy
Come on, come on, come on, come on do it

You know your fascination brought me to you
You lost the inclination
I'm in deepest, deepest, deepest, deep water, yeah
Deep water

You gave me understanding, you gave me all
And I need your helpin' hand
I'm in deepest, deepest, deepest, deep water, yeah
Deep water, yeah
Deep water
Deep water
Deep water
Deep water, yeah

Deep water
Deep water

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Grapefruit's "Deep Water" convey a deep sense of longing and desire to be near someone they have been separated from for a long time. The singer expresses their feelings of being torn apart and wanting to find a way to be reunited with the person they love. They feel lost without this person and struggle to find their place in the world without them.

The powerful metaphor of swimming in deep water conveys the sense of feeling overwhelmed by emotions and the difficulty of navigating life without the one they love. The singer is aware of the risks and dangers of being in deep water but cannot help but feel drawn to it. They are searching for someone to help them, to provide them with the lifeline they need to survive.

The lyrics also express regret, as the singer acknowledges that they could have been more for the person they love but failed to do so. Despite this, they insist that this person's fascination brought them together and they are still deeply in love with them. Overall, the song conveys a sense of yearning for love and the desperate need for someone to save them from drowning in their emotions.

great

Does that mean you are Robert Wale’s son? My late husband, Peter Wale, was his cousin and tried to find him without success. He used to play the album.

Great band, if you're into this song you should check out both their albums "Around" and "Deep Water" You can find em used. Around is more on the psychedelic side compared to this song. Another one of those great bands that were overlooked.

This is really soulful and great 👍

Linda, I agree ! Their earliar single "Dear Delilah" was also top. Please remind that Grapefruit was the 1st band under contract by The Beatles when they started their own "Apple Records" label. My own Linda loved them too but she passed away 7 months ago from cancer. Honestly thanks for your comment on this band from a Belgian lone wolf. Guy.

@stevicki

my husband who passed away a year ago used to talk about this band. I thought he was mistaken about the name. It took youtube to make me wish one more time that he was here for something great that he knew and i didn`t. love ya steve.

Wow I was singing this song while making coffee for the last few mornings for some reason! The song somehow was stuck in my head and doing a long term memory recall or something! Weird how that happens and I can remember stuff that happen in the 60's but cannot just a few days ago or last week. Forget about last month! I think it is called brain cells and they got destroyed in the 70/s huh? Well one reason anyway! LOL:)

@cannonball2207

This takes me back a few years. John Perry on bass used to live next door to me in Rainham, Essex until around 1974. I may still have the promo copy of the single he gave us somewhere. I know I still have a record of his version of Roy Woods song Nancy sing me a song.

The guitarist with the beard is the elder brother of Angus and Malcolm Young from AC/DC as well as from George Young their long year producer and member of the Easybeats. Very musical family
