(1) Grapefruit was a psychedelic rock band formed in 1967 by Scotland-born singer and guitarist George Alexander (b. Alexander Young), a member of the multi-talented Young family that also spawned his brothers George, the rhythm guitarist and founding member of The Easybeats and also Malcolm and Angus Young, both founding members of the Australian hard rock band, AC/DC. Alexander Young had chosen to remain in Britain when the rest of the Youngs emigrated to Australia.
Together with three former members of 'Tony Rivers & The Castaways' (namely John Perry, Geoff Swettenham and Pete Swettenham) Alexander formed 'The Grapefruit' (the band discarded the initial 'The' soon afterwards). Terry Doran, a friend of John Lennon, became their manager, seeing some commercial potential in them. Doran arranged for the band's music publishing rights (as songwriters) to be assigned to the publishing wing of The Beatles' new company Apple and they were the first writers to sign to the company, in early 1968.
Grapefruit's record career was launched in Spring 1968, albeit not on the Beatles' own Apple label, which opened for business a few months later, but on the UK Decca Records label. However, The Beatles continued to take some interest in Grapefruit, with John Lennon introducing the band to the media and inviting John Perry to join in on the recording of the hit single "Hey Jude".[1]
Grapefruit's recording career spanned only two years, from late 1967 to the end of 1969. They released two albums (Grapefruit in 1968, Around Grapefruit in 1969) and several of singles, none of which made a significant impact on the charts. Their best-known track is probably the Terry Melcher-produced "Dear Delilah", which was released in early 1968, but failed to enter the UK Top 20. Towards the end of their career, Grapefruit shifted from melodic pop to a more rough, blues-influenced style of music.
Grapefruit broke up in late 1969. Alexander remained in the music business as a session musician, while John Perry sung and played with artists including Cliff Richard and Bryn Haworth, before going solo in 1985.

I know my baby needs me
I know she wants to stay
Round (la) going round (la la)
I can see her in my dreams
And every day (la)
Every night (la la)
Now I've found the perfect dream is gonna stay
Hey hey hey
For she promised all her loving for tomorrow today
Seven days a week she'll have for me (ooh ooh ooh ooh)
Seven days a week I want 'cause
I need my baby
I need my baby
Round (la) going round (la la)
In a multi-coloured haze
Now I can fly (la)
Round the world (la la)
I can see the milky way
And the cold December turns to early May
Hey hey hey
For she promised all her loving for tomorrow today
Seven days a week she'll have for me (ooh ooh ooh ooh)
Seven days a week I want 'cause
I need my baby
I need my baby
I know she needs me
I know my baby needs me
I know she wants to stay
Round (la) going round (la la)
Would tomorrow ever come
I just can't wait (la)
For the daylight (la la)
To see the morning Sun
When she's giving me her loving every way
Hey hey hey
For she promised all her loving for tomorrow-oh-oh-oh
The lyrics of "Round Going Round" by Grapefruit is a love song expressing the need and desire to be with someone. The repetitive phrase "Round going round" signifies the cyclic nature of love which can make one feel as if they are in a dreamlike state. The lyrics suggest the singer's belief that his baby needs him just as he needs her. He longs for her presence every day and night and feels as if she is everywhere. The perfect dream he found is going to stay as she promised him all her loving for tomorrow today. The repetition of "hey hey hey" in the chorus adds to the optimistic and joyful nature of the song.
The singer conveys his yearning for his love interest by saying that he wants her seven days a week. He is willing to be there for her every day of the week because he requires her presence in his life. The multi-colored haze that he is in represents the confusion and excitement he experiences because of his love. In contrast, when he is with his lover, the world seems to be in focus and he can see the Milky Way. The mention of December and early May suggests that even during the darkest and coldest months, his lover makes his life feel like summer. The unstoppable cycles of the earth, the Milky Way, and his lover's love all intermingle and make him feel grateful and fulfilled.
Overall, "Round Going Round" is a bright and lively song that celebrates the joys of being in love. The lyrics are poetic and convey a sense of excitement, contentment, and optimism. The cyclical nature of the music, as well as the repetitive lyrics, successfully capture the essence of the song and make it a memorable addition to Grapefruit's discography.
