Not Fade Away >
Grateful Dead Lyrics

I wanna tell you how it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
I wanna love you night and day
You know my love will not fade away
You know my love will not fade away
Not fade away

My love's bigger than a Cadillac
I try to show you but you drive me back
Your love for me has got to be real
You're gonna know just how I feel

Love's real, not fade away
Not fade away

Overall Meaning

The Grateful Dead's song "Not Fade Away" is a declaration of love that will stand the test of time. The opening verse sets the tone for the song as the singer tells their lover that they will be together and their love will not wane. The lyrics are powerful and straightforward, with the repeated refrain of "not fade away" emphasizing the singer's determination and commitment to their love.

The second verse of the song delves deeper into the singer's feelings as they compare their love to a Cadillac. The imagery of a car is significant since it represents something powerful and enduring. If the singer's love is bigger than a Cadillac, it suggests that it is an unstoppable force that will continue to grow.

The central message of the song is that love is real and not something that fades away. The repetition of the phrase "not fade away" reinforces the power of the emotion and the idea that love is immortal. Overall, the lyrics of the song create a sense of optimism and hope that is infectious and transcends time.

I was lucky to have my first mini tour in 89 all in the northeast part of country FOXBORO, RICH STADIUM, GIANT'S STADIUM, PHILLY JFK (AND A SHOW OR TWO I MAY HAVE MISSED) & NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER. BUT I COUGHT SOME OF THERE BEST SHOWS THEY PLAYED SINCE THE MAGICAL MONTH & YEAR OF MAY 1977. IN MY OPINION THERE FIRST INCREDIBLE STRETCH OF SHOW's THEY PLAYED. "I KNOW THEY HAVE OTHER STRETCHES OF INCREDIBLE MUSIC" BUT BETWEEN 77 & 89 IT'S A TOSS UP AS TO WHICH IS BETTER. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION THERE BOTH SOOOO DAMN GREAT AND TIGHT THAT IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PICK ONE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHICH KEYBOARDIST YOU PREFER. KEITH AND HIS PIANO OR BRENT AND HIS HIGH ENERGY KEYBOARD.
NOW I STARTED TOURING IN 88 AT OXFORD SPEEDWAY SO I GREW UP SEEING AND LISTENING TO BRENT SO I AM PARTIAL TO HIM BUT KEITH IS NO SLOUCH HIS PIANO PLAYING AND TIMING IS SECOND TO NONE. I PERSONALLY THINK 89 IS HIGHER ENERGY WHICH I PERSONALLY ENJOY MORE. BUT I LEAVE THE DEBATE TO Y'ALL AND THERE DEFINITELY IS NO LOOSER NO MATTER WHAT YEAR YOU PICK. GOD BLESS THE
GRATEFUL DEAD.
THE GREATEST BAND TO EVER PLAY LIVE.
AGAIN MY OPINION.

About 2 min 23 seconds Jerry and Brent going into a call and response connection musically and visually the energy they have collectively is magic. You can see smiles on both of their faces. These are some of the moments I love and so much.
