Talbot began playing solo, but from 1999 Gravenhurst toured extensively as a band. Gravenhurst's first full-band line up featured Dave Collingwood on drums, who also plays with Azalea City Penis Club, and bassist Paul Nash. Nash soon left to concentrate on his own musical project North Sea Navigator, and was replaced by Huw Cooksley. Later, Robin Allender, and Alex Wilkins joined on bass and guitar respectively.
Talbot initially played all of the instruments on the recordings; Dave Collingwood took on the increasingly complex drum parts on 'Fires in Distant Buildings', and again on 'The Western Lands' (2007). Collingwood played in the live band from 2000, and left in 2008.
Talbot collaborated with Guy Bartell in Bronnt Industries Kapital. He kept a blog, The Police Diver's Notebook and edited an adult web comic, Ultraskull.
His death was announced on the 4th of December 2014.
Song Among The Pine
Gravenhurst Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Cones and needles lie atop the dark soil
They will come for me
With searchlights streaming through the cedar trees
Cold ash smother the fire
Cold ash smother the fire
Is just one way the forest speaks to me
The anger in the streets
Is just the way a broken city breathes
The Gravenhurst song "Song Among The Pine" speaks about a sense of isolation and alienation. The singer describes himself standing amid the pine cones and needles that lie atop dark soil, evoking a sense of solitude and a disconnection from people. Despite this solitude, there is an impending sense of doom, as he feels certain that "they" will come for him, armed with searchlights streaming through the cedar trees. The entire scene is one of foreboding and a sense of being hunted or trapped.
The second verse speaks more of the singer's connection to nature than his separation from society. The gentle lull of the pine trees contrasted with the aggression of city streets. This idea is further developed in the final statement of the verse, in which the anger seen in a broken city is the same one as the forest's voice. Both these separate but parallel worlds are a manifestation of a communal spirit, which is important to us all.

Song among the pine
My melody echoes through the forest of evergreens
Cones and needles lie atop the dark soil
The forest floor is carpeted with fallen pine cones and needles
They will come for me
I anticipate being sought after
With searchlights streaming through the cedar trees
The search party will navigate through the forest with flashlights
Cold ash smother the fire
Once-burning flames are now extinguished and smothered with cool ash
The ripple of the stream
I hear the soft sound of water trickling over rocks
Is just one way the forest speaks to me
The sounds of nature offer comfort and companionship
The anger in the streets
I recognize the frustration and hostility of a troubled city
Is just the way a broken city breathes
This unrest is a symptom of a struggling, divided community

I'm in the same boat. RIP Nick Talbot, wish I could have discovered this incredible music while he was still with us.

I feel a lonely joy from this song. As if I know I am stuck in the dark and mundane but inside I am free and happy.
To visualize I imagine a man in his twenties laying in his bed depressed by his life but he’s daydreaming of hiking in the mountains with the woman he loves. They both stop, just to look at life, and the sky and mountains. They smile and carry on down the trail.
He then in real life falls asleep, smiling.
