Song Among The Pine
Gravenhurst Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Song among the pine
Cones and needles lie atop the dark soil
They will come for me
With searchlights streaming through the cedar trees

Cold ash smother the fire
Cold ash smother the fire
The ripple of the stream
Is just one way the forest speaks to me

The anger in the streets
Is just the way a broken city breathes

Overall Meaning

The Gravenhurst song "Song Among The Pine" speaks about a sense of isolation and alienation. The singer describes himself standing amid the pine cones and needles that lie atop dark soil, evoking a sense of solitude and a disconnection from people. Despite this solitude, there is an impending sense of doom, as he feels certain that "they" will come for him, armed with searchlights streaming through the cedar trees. The entire scene is one of foreboding and a sense of being hunted or trapped.

The second verse speaks more of the singer's connection to nature than his separation from society. The gentle lull of the pine trees contrasted with the aggression of city streets. This idea is further developed in the final statement of the verse, in which the anger seen in a broken city is the same one as the forest's voice. Both these separate but parallel worlds are a manifestation of a communal spirit, which is important to us all.

Nice song but I guess you got the wrong cover! :) This is actually from 2007's "the western land" - even though I gotta give you the mood is a bit closer to the previous ones'.

What a sad and unfortunate way to discover an artist - I only listened to Nick Talbot tonight after reading that he had passed away. RIP - you certainly have a new fan.

I'm in the same boat. RIP Nick Talbot, wish I could have discovered this incredible music while he was still with us.

The Lone Outlaw

I feel a lonely joy from this song. As if I know I am stuck in the dark and mundane but inside I am free and happy.

To visualize I imagine a man in his twenties laying in his bed depressed by his life but he’s daydreaming of hiking in the mountains with the woman he loves. They both stop, just to look at life, and the sky and mountains. They smile and carry on down the trail.

He then in real life falls asleep, smiling.
