For me though, the best re-entry scene is the Apollo 13 scene. The built up to it, the emotions, and probably also the fact that it is accurate and a real life story makes it the best one for me.

For me, the thing that gets me with this re-entry is.. In the movie one of her daughter's died, and she carries the death of her child with her the whole film always hinting that she doesn't really care to live anymore, which is understandable with a loss of a child, but in the re-election entry she fights to live, she comes falling down to earth, on fire, in a hostile environment, then lands in the lake and swims up onto land, and it's like she is born again , back into life

If you look up videos of the orbiting ISS, which are readily available on yt, you'll find the actual space station appears much lower than the one in the movie. Both the Chines space station and ISS occupy similar orbits (about 400km above the earth).

@lux 03 I had two. Jeb on my first manned Mun mission, and Val on a Jeb rescue mission. I eventually recovered both of them, and Jeb (despite having never touched Minmus, Val did all of that) has been to Duna, Ike, an orbit of Jool, a flyby of Tylo, and Gilly.

@Naveen K Size/volume only matters in the sense that it’s used to calculate the density of an object (density = mass/volume), which is what curves the space-time continuum, “creating” gravity. Size/volume doesn’t have a real impact, the size of the gravity field is still given by the object’s mass/density.
For example, the size of the gravity field of a neutron star is enormous, while being small in size. Theoretically, a very big object with a very low mass, will have a smaller gravity field than the object itself (in other words, its gravity field would end inside the object, not affecting even other objects on its surface).

Curvature doesn't completely depend on the size/area of the stellar object. it depends on the mass density and the energy the object contains. Recently astronomers discovered a neutron star of size somewhat bigger than the moon but have a dense mass that is 3 times that of the sun. Really amazing things than these exist that completely baffle the human mind. the denser the object is, the deeper it curves the space-time fabric like a black hole curving to deepest.

the size/area matters to measure how large is the gravity field spectrum is spread around the object,
but the mass density matters to measure how strong the gravity(how steep curved the fabric) is

It was once part of a singular force right after the Big Bang, which split into gravity and the electronuclear force, which then split into the strong nuclear force and the electroweak force, which then split into the electromagnetic force and the weak nuclear force. Gravity kind of is and isn’t a force, basically.

Funny thing, the CSS is planned to have a co-orbiting space telescope roughly the size of Hubble called Xuntian, to be launched in 2024. Of course it wouldn't be serviced by a crewed vehicle, instead if it needed to be serviced it will rendezvous with the CSS and the station's robotic arm will grab it and hold into it while the crew EVA over and do whatever need to be done.

The shuttle at the beginning of the film is Explorer, which doesn't exist, flying STS-157, which also never existed. The ISS did then and does now exist. Net realism change is 0.

Tiangong did not and now does exist. Therefore that is a net increase in realism

So I know that that person is inside of the capsule, and is therefore protected from the thousand degree air rushing by at whatever Mach speed that dude is going, but the capsule is SPINNING, which means two things. First, the capsule would be exposing different cross-sections of itself to the atmosphere and potentially increasing resistance and temperature while doing so, and secondly, it would be exposing sections of itself that are not outfitted with a heavy-duty heat shield. Those capsules are designed for a PLANNED re-entry, which has the capsule facing its bottom down at all times, not a tumble where the whole thing is being exposed to the extreme maximum heat. So yeah that capsule would be destroyed the moment it has anything other than its bottom heat shield facing the earth

Ok, first off, your technically correct, however there was an incident in Space history on Soyuz 5, where something had went wrong, and the capsule didn't separate from the service module, and because of this, the vehicle was facing head first into the plasma, instead of heatshield first, and was like this for the majority of the way down, it was mere moments before the capsule would cave in and get destroyed by the force and heat of plasma, however luckily the capsule broke free from the service module and was now able to re-orient itself with heatshield (much like in the movie). Luckily the space craft landed safely, however not before landing in a snowy area and landing at a weird angle, and right as the landing jets fired it caused it to hit the ground harder than normal and the cosmonaut literally shook around in the seat, and slammed his face into the control panel, breaking his jaw. @WretchedMusic87 Getting to space, that's the easy part. Coming back, that's the most dangerous mission. A tiny little capsule hurtling towards the earth faster than the speed of sound, fire is trying to engulf you, air resistance is trying to shred you, and you have to get said capsule to slow down enough so that it doesn't kill you. As Chris Hadfield described it, it's like flying a meteorite home.

@xPUNiSH3R my friend I studied in a school which had broken benches and I used to go to school on a horsecart (no I'm not old, just 26 years old). you know they taught me how space ships / space rockets works.
It's pity that you don't know that most of the rocket is suppose to come down and crash into oceans (if goes wrong than on land). The thing which reaches the space is the payload. The name Tiangong used in the movie for the space station is known publicly since 2007.

There is something deeply spiritual and poetic about burning while falling from the sky.
It references the fall of Satan. The burning may mean a lot of things, and so can the fall. Both can be positive or negative.
And then, let's suppose that a person has no "chamber" and burns while falling... the ashes would be spread in the wind before they touch the ground.

Actually, it's more about physics than spirituality. If it's still available online, I highly recommend that you download and read the medical evaluation of the recovered remains of the seven Columbia astronauts. This re-entry scene reminded me of that morning when a shower of debris told everyone that they'd gone on to a much higher place.

Beautiful but unrealistic: torsion and drag forces would have ripped open all docking lid connections, tumbling would have torn her apart, probably ripping off her head and arms. Unlikely she still could have pressed any button while tumbling. The software would not be able to recover a stable position at that time anymore and hot gases would have cut already into the pressure shell cabin. But still beautiful

1. Airlocks open inwards, its basically impossible to open them outward without ripping the structure of the station apart and at the point where that mattered the atmosphere wasn't thick enough.
2. When the reentry vehicle was tumbling with the service module and chunk of the station attached she was pretty much right at the center of mass. So despite spinning pretty quick she wouldn't be subjected to that much force.
3. Astronauts train to be able to remain coherent and control their craft while tumbling randomly.
4. The software didn't really do anything to regain stability, a capsule shape is naturally stable in the correct position which is why everyone uses that shape, it falls into a stable position on its own.

However, there are many errors in the movie and in this scene where the parts starts to disintegrate is actually high, pretty much higher than it should be.

@spaceflight101 well that's just 60 KMs and considering its orbit being Some 250 miles up, it has to come way too low to feel the atmosphere and disintegrate, but in this movie it was way too high than just 60 KMs.

@spaceflight101 well, the space shuttles used an aluminum alloy for the structure, and the tiles happened to break off at the worst place. Space modules are most likely made of more heat-resistant alloys
