Staircase to the Day

On a staircase to the day
Watch the numbers fallin' from below
Lost sensations never known
Every time that I see your smile
Makes me feel I gotta cry
Come on home, won't you come on home
Take this hurt away from me
See my tears fallin' to the floor
See this agony that's me
You haunt my days, haunt my nights
Brief excursions of delight
Then I wake and know it's all the same
Nothin' left -- no, nothin'
Feelin' like I'll never get away
On a staircase to the day
The song "Staircase to the Day" by Gravy Train is a poignant reflection on the struggle of trying to escape from one's problems and the hopelessness that can come with feeling constantly trapped. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing for a way out, with the singer feeling like they'll never escape on the "staircase to the day." They watch the numbers fall from below, a visual representation of the weight of their problems dragging them down. The lost sensations add to the feeling of hopelessness, as though the singer is unable to experience joy or happiness anymore.
The song then pivots to a bittersweet moment of joy, with the singer describing the effect that the person they love has on them. Although seeing their smile makes them want to cry, it also clearly brings them happiness and some sense of relief. The plea to "Come on home" is a desperate cry for help, asking the person they love to take away the hurt that they're feeling.
The final verse returns to the sense of hopelessness that permeates the song. The singer's tears are falling on the floor, and they're trapped in their agony. The brief moments of delight they experience are merely distractions from the reality of their situation. When they wake up, they're still trapped on the staircase to the day, with nothing left and no hope of escape.
Overall, the song is a powerful expression of the feelings of hopelessness and despair that can come with experiencing difficult circumstances. The lyrics are deeply introspective, with the singer examining their own emotional state with raw honesty.

Шикарная вещь совершенно неизвестной группы. Напоминает лиричные медляки Uriah Heep.

Gravy Train is my sudden opening that I love from the first sound. I couldn't even imagine that I can find some group like this in prog-rock; I do love and know most of greatest prog groups . This song is very pretty, I do love it a lot. The same time it sounds not like a kind of prog, but it has some associations with Uriah Heep (I love them too, of course), who were masters of sweet ballades.

Watched this band many times, they played our local labour club a number of times, brilliant album. Sadly i never got to see the original line up with Barry Davenport on drums.

One of those bands I saw live [once, in 1975] and never heard on record - till tonight.
