Brother
Grayson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lake of fire
There you go, somebody taking
The lake of fire
There's a reason why
Wh-what happens if you throw somebody in a lake
Either their the best swimmer in the world
If they just stay in there forever
Eventually they're gonna do what?
Th-they're gonna drown
See, Jesus saved you from drowning in the lake of fire
So if somebody saved you from drowning
You're gonna act like you're saved
You're not gonna spend the rest of your life
Acting like you still drowning
Are you?
Like I'll be walking down the street
What's up Josh?
I'm drowning!
N-no dude that was a week ago
That was a week ago Josh
You on dry land bro, you good
You on dry land man
It's me, it's Josh
Not a shark
You're not even in the water anymore
You good
Nobody does that
Unless they got PTSD or something
Right?
And a lot of Christians
Are walking around with PTSD
Spiritual PTSD
They still acting like they drowning
Also drowning in their sins

I seen somebody else say that in the audience
They still acting like they drowning-g-g-g-g

Overall Meaning

In Grayson's song "Brother," the use of the metaphorical "lake of fire" serves as a deep representation of existential struggles, personal torment, and the concept of sin and salvation. The lake symbolizes a dire state of suffering, despair, or sinful existence, where individuals who find themselves submerged can metaphorically ‘drown’ in their troubles. The mention of Jesus saving someone from this dire circumstance acts as a significant turning point in the narrative; it suggests that every person possesses the potential for redemption and spiritual enlightenment. When the metaphor is introduced, it grabs the listener’s attention and invites them to reflect on the broader implications of salvation and the transformative power it can offer, akin to being pulled out of dangerous waters and placed on solid ground.

The singer emphasizes the absurdity of continuing to act as if one is drowning after being saved. This idea illustrates a profound human experience — the tendency to cling to negative emotions, past trauma, or guilt, even after achieving freedom or redemption. The rhetorical question posed about what happens if someone is thrown into a lake further elaborates this notion, pointing out that if one has been rescued, there should be an acknowledgment of that salvation and a shift in behavior. Grayson’s imagery urges listeners to distinguish between their past struggles and their present state. The singer calls out individuals who, despite having been pulled from hardship ("the lake"), still carry the weight of that past trauma, portraying it humorously yet poignantly by envisioning a conversation where someone continues to lament about drowning even when they are on dry land.

The references to “PTSD” highlight the psychological complexities associated with being saved. This comparison between spiritual trauma and post-traumatic stress is intriguing, as it underlines how deeply individuals can be affected by their pasts. It opens a discussion about the mental barriers that can prevent a person from fully embracing their new identity as a saved individual. Graydon alludes to the reality that many Christians and individuals in general struggle with the lingering effects of their past wrongdoings, essentially suggesting that they practice self-imposed limitations on their joy and spiritual health. This perspective resonates with many, as it sheds light on the internal struggle of reconciling one’s actions with their current state of being; it’s about moving from a place of despair to one of peace and fulfillment.

Ultimately, "Brother" serves as a heartfelt message encouraging listeners to embrace their salvation and to release the burdens that may anchor them to their past. It highlights the importance of recognizing one’s current position in life — on solid ground, rather than still drowning in regret or sin. Grayson's poignant narrative reminds us not only of the importance of acknowledging salvation but also of the responsibility it conveys: moving forward with faith, confidence, and a transformed identity. The song is a call to action for individuals to genuinely live out their liberation, shed the weight of their spiritual PTSD, and engage in a life full of hope rather than one tethered to past traumas. In essence, this lyrical exploration promotes a journey toward healing, acceptance, and joyful existence in the light of grace.

LYRICS

I've been working 12 hours a day
Living in hell
Broke back and a sore leg
I know it all too well
Man I know you're tired
And you want to give in
Your mind's all over the place
And don't quite fit in

Listen to me brother
Oh brother please listen well
Don't be afraid to call me I'll help you if I can
You don't have to be alone
I'd drive 500 miles in the freezing winter and pack up everything you own
Listen to me brother I just don't want to hear youre gone

Think of the old farmhouse the picking and strumming
All the music and jams
indigo on state street busking for dollars that gal always makes me laugh
Think about whatever gets you through another day, sometimes that's all we have

Listen to me brother
Oh brother please listen well
Don't be afraid to call me I'll help you if I can
You don't have to be alone
Id drive 500 miles in the freezing winter and pack up everything you own

Listen to me brother I just don't want to hear you're gone
Listen to me brother I just want you to come home

Dude! You got a great voice and as sad as this song is, it's a great song!

I just mean it's sad because people aren't what they used to be. Ya know?

Fckn awesome to hear about your sobriety. Music like this seriously helps with my sobriety and mental health. Please don't let anything ever rob you of the magic that you got.

I'm not an artist in any medium. You though, you've got a great voice. Obviously you have the ability to write great music. That's what artists are, magic. They can give air and a moment to test to those whose lungs are empty. Light to those stumbling in the dark, and warmth to those that've become cold. Don't let anyone or anything rob you of that rare ability you so clearly have.

When I was strung out on heroin 10 years ago my best friend who lived in Texas paid for me a grey hound ticket to where he lived and let me stay in a bedroom of my own, bought me clothes, got me a job, and helped me get sober. All out of the kindness of his heart. He's the best person I've ever known. This song reminds me of him. I wouldn't be clean or maybe even alive if not for him
