Like a Stone
Grayson Erhard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a cobweb afternoon in a room full of emptiness
By a freeway, I confess I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death, reading how we′ll die alone
And if we're good, we′ll lay to rest anywhere we want to go

In your house, I long to be
Room by room, patiently
I'll wait for you there like a stone
I'll wait for you there alone

And on my deathbed, I will pray to the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone who will take me to heaven
To a place I recall, I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised, the wine was bled, and there you led me on

In your house, I long to be
Room by room, patiently
I′ll wait for you there like a stone
I′ll wait for you there alone, alone

(Instrumental)

And on I read until the day was gone
And I sat in regret of all the things I've done
For all that I′ve blessed and all that I've wronged
In dreams until my death, I will wander on

In your house, I long to be
Room by room, patiently

I′ll wait for you there like a stone
I'll wait for you there alone, alone

Overall Meaning

Grayson Erhard's song Like a Stone is a melancholic and introspective piece that discusses the human condition, mortality, and the longing for connection. At the beginning of the song, the singer finds himself lost in an empty room by a freeway, reading a book full of death and contemplating the inevitability of dying alone. The lyrics suggest that if one is good in life, they can rest anywhere they want to go after death.

The second verse talks about the singer's desire to be with someone, specifically in their house, room by room, patiently awaiting their arrival. This person is symbolized by a stone, which stands still and unwavering. The singer is willing to wait there alone, just like a stone. The third and final verse takes a more spiritual and metaphysical turn, as the singer prays to the gods and angels, hoping to be taken to heaven like a pagan. He recalls being in this place before, where the sky was bruised and wine was bled, and where he was led by the person he longs for.

Overall, Grayson Erhard's Like a Stone offers a thoughtful and emotional take on life, death, and the longing for connection and meaning. The song's imagery of emptiness, waiting, and pagan rituals creates a solemn and enigmatic atmosphere that leaves the listener with much to contemplate.

This performance needs 32 million views, not 32k. Amazing guitar skills and a passionate voice - wonderful cover!

One of my favourite Audioslave tracks and so wonderfully translated to solo acoustic guitar, vocals, and foot bells! Such a fantastic arrangement, and it is evident that Grayson takes training his voice as seriously as he does practising guitar to produce such a beautiful, emotive rendition. Great tribute to Chris Cornell, too.
