Summer loving happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be
Summer days drifting away to oh oh the summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far
Like does he have a car
She swam by me she got a cramp
He swam by me got my suit damp
I saved her life she nearly drown
He showed off splashing around
Summer sun something's begun but oh oh the summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?
Took her bowling in the arcade
We went strolling drank lemonade
We made out under the dock
We stayed out till ten o'clock
Summer fling don't mean a thing but oh oh the summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more
But you don't gotta brag
Tell me more, tell me more
Cause he sounds like a drag
He got friendly holding my hand
She got friendly down in the sand
He was sweet just turned eightteen
Well she was good you know what I mean
Summer heat boy and girl meet but oh oh the summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more
How much dough did he spend?
Tell me more, tell me more
Could she get me a friend?
It turned colder that's where it ends
So I told her we'd still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
Wonder what she's doing now
Summer dreams ripped at the seams but oh those summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more

The lyrics depict their fond memories of the time they spent together, from meeting each other to flirting and finally having a summer romance. I saw my problems and I'll see the light
We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger we can go too far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word
They think our love is just a growin' pain
Why don't they understand? it's just a cryin' shame
Their lips are lyin', only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel, grease is the word
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
This is a life of illusion, a life of control
Mixed with confusion, what're we doin' here?
We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word
Grease is the word, its the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning

Grease is the way we are feeling

John Cate
This happened in 1978, the year that Barry Gibb wrote more No. 1 hits in one year than anyone before or since. Seven different songs he penned hit the top spot in '78, including songs for the Bee Gees, Yvonne Elliman, Andy Gibb, and Frankie Valli. This was the last one:
โHow Deep Is Your Loveโ (penned Oct 1977) โ 3 weeks, Dec 24 1977 to Jan 7 1978
โStayinโ Aliveโ (Dec 1977) โ 4 weeks, Feb 4 to Feb 25
โ(Love Is) Thicker Than Waterโ (Nov 1977) โ 2 weeks, Mar 4 to Mar 11
โNight Feverโ (Feb 1978) โ 8 weeks, Mar 18 to May 6
โIf I Canโt Have Youโ (Dec 1977) โ 1 week, May 13
โShadow Dancingโ (Apr 1978) โ 7 weeks, Jun 17 to Jul 29
โGreaseโ (May 1978) โ 2 weeks, Aug 26 to Sep 2

This is by far the best song from the whole movie.
It's also incidentally what makes the film better than the stage version.
Smfsableye
berbatov3890 I saw a stage version that did Grease is the Word as the intro, is that atypical of the stage version or something?
Daniel Weddell
Smfsableye It's from the revised 2007 Broadway revival of Grease. I know both Samuel French and Theatrical Rights Worldwide both have rights to the stage versions of Grease, as to which one is the original 1971 version without Grease is the Word or the revised version with it, I'm not sure at all.
aerialkate
berbatov3890 It's a Barry Gibb song - he sings some of the backing vocals too. He always admired Frankie Valli and has said he modelled, in part, his falsetto on Valli's usual vocal style - though Valli doesn't sing falsetto on this track. You can't beat a Bee Gees tune and the combination of a Gibb melody and Frankie's vocals is pretty irresistible in a pop record.
Christopher Walker
Oh hell yes! It's my favorite song in the whole film.
