Gone With the Wind
Great White Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart is empty
Like cold open ground
Where ghosts & memories
Follow you round

Replacing old friends
No more to be found
All gone their ways
With the new stars in town

All of their laughter
Has drifted away
Gone with the wind
Like yesterday's song

Gone with the wind
Like yesterday's song
Gone
Gone with the wind

There's no sign of the lover
Who pins butterflies
No sign of fair-weather
No sweet soundin' lies

Now I'm a stranger
My eyes are set free
Like a man on a mountain
How I can see

All the ways
Illusions deceive
In a city of prayers
Where no one believes

When all of your dreams have scattered away
Gone with the wind
Like yesterday's song
Gone with the wind

Like yesterday's songs

Gone
Gone with the wind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics describe the feeling of emptiness and loss, both of physical things and of people who have moved on or passed away. The comparison to the wind emphasizes the transitory nature of life and how quickly things can change or disappear. The singer reflects on the memories and ghosts that linger in the empty space, and how they serve as a reminder of what was lost. The character mourns the passing of old friends who have been replaced by newer, more popular people, and the resulting feeling of being alone in a crowded social scene. The lyrics dive deep into the concept of illusion and how easily we can fall for them, leading to disappointment when they eventually reveal their true nature.

The song is a reflection of the transitory nature of life, the importance of memories, and the need to move forward despite loss. The song might have been inspired by the demise of their original guitarist, Mark Kendall’s friend, Randy Rhoads, who had died in a plane crash in 1982. The song was originally written by Jack Russell before he joined Great White and was played by his former band, “Dante Fox”. After joining Great White, Jack re-wrote the lyrics to the song. The song was released in 1991 as part of their “Hooked” album. The song was one of the top tracks on this album and was certain to be a big hit as expected.

The greatest song ever made... heard by less than 10k people in the world.. True Crime! How does a Rock band add Clarence Clemons to a tune & not advertised like this? Pure Genius & Incredible Deep, Bluesy, & True Tunes.. Ever!

@Kiko_C

Seriously 1023 views? This song is a classic, a true blues rock anthem and my favorite Great White song from all their discography...

@johndonley9407

I agree, but thinking back to that time in my life, this album went against what was considered normal for Great White. Consequently, it was poorly received by the public, and airplay stopped shortly after that.

@Kiko_C

john donley Yea probably... Too bad. This happens to a lot of quality albums...

@johndonley9407

yeah man. it's a shame so many great artists and albums never got the exposure they deserved

@jakelaguna2278

Man... This album was supposed to be a throw-away to get out of their recording contract... BUT what a great gem this turned-out to be...
