Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
Green Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me, and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk alone

I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone, and I walk a

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines
What's fucked up and every thing's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone, I walk alone
I walk alone and I walk a

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah

I walk alone, and I walk a

I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk a

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Overall Meaning

Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a powerful song about loneliness and alienation in a crowded, hostile world. The song starts off describing the sounds of the falling rain as an Armageddon flame, and then transitions into observing the howling of the dogs adding to the "Faith and Misery hymn". The company that lost the war is bleeding out and the names of those who died in the war are forgotten. The singer is begging for a dream world that's different from the hollow lies we tend to believe. He then sings about the "protesting" in time, although "the money's on the other side". We're then given a reference to the government with shouts of "Sieg Heil" in the song.

The singer or the outcasts present in the song aren't pleased with their present situation and want revenge, that is, punishing those who've wronged them. They're the outlaws as their ideas and beliefs differ from the majority. The song ends on a note of hopelessness with the singer walking in a lonely street where his shadow's the only one walking beside him. He wishes he could find someone to accompany him, but until then, it is an empty street where he is just another lonely face in the crowd, walking alone.

@EDC98

Here in 2024 😎 heroes come and go, but Green Day is forever ♾️

I remember when they were on the radio back in the early 2000s 📻

A band essential to my childhood that made me love rock music 🎵🎸🥁

That sound man, there's no one else like 'em.

That transition from "Holiday" to this song never gets old and I was always happy that radio stations played both songs right after each other 😎

Every now and then I'll hear one or the other song on the radio, but never both.

Rock on green day, rock on 🤘
