Dreaming
Green Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I met you in the restaurant
You could tell I was no debutante
You asked me what's my pleasure
A movie or a measure?
I'll have a cup of tea and tell you of my

Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free

I don't want to live on charity
Pleasure's real or is it fantasy?
Reel to reel is living rarity
People stop and stare at me
We just walk on by, we just keep on dreaming

Feet feet, walking on two of my
Meet meet, meet me at the turnstile
I never met him, I'll never forget him
Dream, dream, even for a little while
Dream, dream, filling up an idle hour
Fade away, radiate

I sit by and watch the river flow
I sit by and watch the traffic go
Imagine something of your very own
Something you can have and hold
I'd build a road in gold just to have some

Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free

Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming

Overall Meaning

in this song is portrayed as a liberating and empowering experience for the singer. The opening lines describe how the singer and the person they met at the restaurant are different from each other. The singer is not a debutante, which implies that they are not part of the elite or high society, while the other person is not described in any particular way. This creates a contrast that reveals the singer's self-perception and how people might view them.

The next lines depict the person asking the singer what their pleasure is, whether it's a movie or a measure. This implies that the other person is offering the singer something enjoyable or stimulating, which can be either an escape or a form of entertainment. However, the singer chooses a cup of tea, which is linked to British culture and is often associated with moments of contemplation or relaxation. Furthermore, the singer uses this opportunity to talk about their dreams, which highlights the importance of imagination and aspiration for the singer.

The chorus repeats the phrase "dreaming is free" twice to emphasize how dreaming is an activity that anyone can engage in, regardless of their social status or financial means. The next verse expresses the singer's desire to have something real instead of living off charity or imagining a fantasy. They believe that true pleasure is hard to come by, and it's something that is not widely accessible. The line "Reel to reel is living rarity" invokes the image of an old-fashioned movie projector, which further reinforces the idea of something that is rare and almost extinct.

The final lines describe how people stop and stare at the singer, but they just keep on dreaming and walking by. This implies that the singer is not affected by the opinions of others, and their dreams keep them moving forward. The next section uses repetition to create a rhythmic effect that shows the singer's movement as they walk towards their dream. The line "I never met him, I'll never forget him" implies that the singer has encountered someone or something that has left a lasting impression on them, and they are still dreaming about it. The last two lines of the verse encourage the listener to dream, even if it's just for a little while, which conveys a sense of hope and optimism.

The part where Billie interacts with his fan on stage brings tears to my eyes because of her reaction. It's like getting to meet someone whom you looked up to your entire life and be SEEN. It's an unexplainable miracle, and it's a dream of every fan

@eviehammond9509

Green Day is one of the rare bands that actually mean it when they say they LOVE, ACKNOWLEDGE & APPRECIATE their fans...AND IT ALWAYS SHOWS!!💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

@burntflowersfallen8644

@@eviehammond9509 same with Palaye Royale and MCR. All those bands that take their fans for granted should not really be famous BC we are kinda the ones that help them get there.

@MoonyLuvsGreenDay

@@MoonyLuvsGreenDay I would probably just collapse to my knees sobbing "OMG I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH AND HAVE DREAMED OF THIS FOR 25 YEARS AND BILLIE WHY ARE YOU SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL OMG WAAAAH"

@shadowhunterrachel5732

@rj zander dood we get it, you have great taste and all, but please go spew your toxicity somewhere else, instead of trying to make a point that you can't respect the band and every one else who listens to and loves the band

@hintasakeus6032

I really love the vibe that Green Day's quarantine music has been having lately. It seems like Billie Joe is being pretty nostalgic about all the good times he had before the coronavirus, and hopefully making new good memories at home too, and it's really sweet. Makes me sad and happy at the same time :)

@po0p587

Oh yeah, I mean all the songs he's covered where released before like 1985

@kronostime8146

I hope they make an album with all of the covers.
