Emenius Sleepus
Green Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw my friend the other day
And I don't' know
Exactly just what he became
It goes to show
It wasn't long ago
And I was just like you
And now I think I'm sick
And I want to go home

How have I been how have you been
It's been so long
What have you done with all your time
And what went wrong
I knew you back when
And you, you knew me
And now I think you're sick
And I want to go home

Anybody ever say no?
Ever tell you that you weren't right?
Where did all the little kid go?
Did you lose it in a hateful fight?
And you know it's true
It wasn't long ago
And I was just like you

And now I think I'm sick
And I want to go home

Overall Meaning

The song "Emenius Sleepus" by Green Day is a reflective piece in which the singer expresses his observation and feelings towards a friend who has changed drastically since they last met. The song is most likely about the struggles of growing older and losing one's innocence, as the singer talks about how he and his friend were once like children, but now his friend has changed for the worse. The lyrics "And now I think you're sick, and I want to go home" could suggest a desire for safety and security, wanting to retreat to a time when things were simpler and less complicated.

The song also touches upon societal expectations and how they can influence and change individuals. The lyrics "Ever tell you that you weren't right?" and "Did you lose it in a hateful fight?" could be interpreted as the singer questioning his friend's recent behavior, wondering if they were pressured into changing who they were in order to fit in and act "right." Overall, the song provides a poignant reflection on the loss of innocence and growing pains that come with growing older.

I'm so glad I'm discovering the old Green Day stuff right now and not when I'm old.

@ColtTravis

I remember when it was new, so I guess I already am.👴

This is their best album in my opinion, but Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, and American Idiot are also fantastic.
And if you've never heard their old song '2000 Light Years Away', it's worth checking out.

@rionasera

Let me give you some girl to girl album advice, Insomniac is the best, then Dookie, 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, and Kerplunk. Nimrod is partially good, but everything after that is absolute trash.

@Traviolie

@@rionasera You didn't like Revolution Radio or even American Idiot? They're definitely not trash albums.

@hollowsid9623

@@rionasera I wouldn't say everything after Nimrod is trash
Warning was great and American Idiot is a masterpiece
21st Century Breakdown and Revolution Radio are great as well

@nathanielhoops7509

@@hollowsid962321st century breakdown has a few good songs imo revolution radio was decent and there was 1 or two decent songs on the new album (most are terrible though)

My dad was really in the punk scene and apparently Green Day opened for his band! Back before Green Day was well known.
