Hitchin' a Ride
Green Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey mister, where you headed?
Are you in a hurry?
Need a lift to happy hour? Say "Oh, no"
Do you brake for distilled spirits?
I need a break as well
The well that inebriates the guilt
One, two, one, two, three, four
Cold turkey's getting stale
Tonight, I'm eating crow
Fermented salmonella, poison oak, no
There's a drought at the fountain of youth
And I'm dehydrated
My tongue is swelling up
I say, "One, two, one, two, three, four"

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitchin' a ride

There's a drought at the fountain of youth
And I'm dehydrated
My tongue is swelling up, I say, "Shit"

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)

Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)
Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)
Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)
Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)
Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)

Hitchin' a ride (don't know where to go)
Hitchin' a ride (say birthday boys, hey)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Hitchin' a Ride" by Green Day describe a protagonist who is in need of a ride to happy hour. He asks a passerby if they are headed in that direction and if they "brake for distilled spirits" implying that he wants to drink. The singer sings about being off the wagon and the difficulties of staying sober. He mentions how "troubled times" have led him to this state and how he needs to quench his thirst with alcohol before heading off to a party he has been invited to.

The song represents the feeling of being lost and lonely and not really knowing what to do with oneself. The first verse of the song is about asking for a ride from a stranger and hoping to find happiness at the end of the journey. The second verse talks about the various struggles that the singer is facing such as addiction, dehydration and not being able to find the fountain of youth. The chorus captures the essence of the song's theme by repeating the line "I'm off the wagon and I'm hitchin' a ride," conveying the sense that the singer is lost and doesn't know where to go.

The song has been interpreted in different ways, but the common thread is the feeling of being lost and the need for a break from reality. Some interpret the song as a commentary on society, where people are often trying to escape their everyday lives and find happiness through temporary pleasures such as alcohol, drugs or other hedonistic practices.

@thenewlifeofme

Ikr, I mean songs like "When I come around" are nice and chill to listen to but they're a bit basic and safe, this one is more diverse in pace and even the clip is more interesting and original (imo)

I disagree, if my friend that only listens to only God's Favorite Band knows this song, it's not underrated. But, Hitchin a Ride among one of my favorites.
