Oh Yeah!
Green Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Yeah I got it)

I'm in the crowd full of angels and demons
I'm looking out for the jingoes and heathens
Nobody move and nobody gonna get hurt
Reach for the sky with your face in the dirt

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I'm feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain't it funny how we're running out of hope

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
(Do we want it? Do, do we want it?)
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

I got blood on my hands in my pockets
That's what you get turning bullets into rockets
I am a kid of a bad education
The shooting star of a lowered expectation

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I'm feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain't it funny how we're running out of hope

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
(Do we want it? Do, do we want it?)
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

I'm just a face in the crowd of spectators
Do the sound of the voice of the traitor
Dirty looks and I'm looking for a payback
Burning books in a bulletproof backpack

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I'm feeling kinda low
Everybody got a scar
Ain't it funny how we're running out of hope

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
(Do we want it? Do, do we want it?)
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

(Do we want it? Do, do we want it?) (Everybody is a star)
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah (Everybody is a star)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Green Day's song "Oh Yeah!" touch on themes of societal barriers and divisions, disillusionment, and the struggle for personal identity amidst chaotic cultural and political turmoil. The opening lines suggest a crowded room full of contrasting personalities and intentions, expressed through the use of the terms angels and demons, and jingoes and heathens. The singer suggests a need for stillness and caution in order to avoid harm, but also implores the listener to reach for the sky despite being brought low.

The chorus of the song highlights the idea that everyone is a star in their own way, and while we may all have internal and external struggles, there is a sense of unity in that experience. The mention of "running out of hope" implies a larger societal issue that is felt by everyone, regardless of personal background or circumstance.

The second verse references violence and the singer's own potential culpability, as they have "blood on my hands in my pockets" from choosing to turn "bullets into rockets." This is followed by a nod to the impact of upbringing and education on the individual, as well as the pressure of lowered expectations.

The final verse is more ambiguous, but suggests a growing anger and a desire for revenge, perhaps in response to perceived betrayal or injustice. The mention of a "bulletproof backpack" conjures images of school shootings and the intense emotional fallout they create. Overall, the song grapples with complex societal issues through a lens of personal experience and a sense of hope amidst despair.

@BenGoatboyWaters

Been waiting for this album since the brilliant Revolution Radio came out and was so excited for an album with the same power and bpm of American Idiot, 21st century, and Revolution Radio....... But this sounds like a slightly better version of Warning, without a genuine classic GD standout song. This is a BeBop/Surf-rock/Hot-rodders album, the first half of which sounded like it was written by The Offspring, using bits of American, 21st uno dos tré and Revolution, jumbled it up and threw it up into qubase, with the track bpm's, and sound production settings on "a bit rockier than Warning". I genuinely hope that It's a piss take, and the REAL Album, not this EP that's an insult to American Idiot (the cover, constant lyrical references and even outright melodical rips). I was wanting to love this with all my heart and soul as I've followed Green Day, my favourite band, since 1991, so I know a thing or 2 about their music. Okay, I admit that when played live, many of the songs will be transformed ala MINORITY, but we can't always listen to the album live, so as a stand alone album, number 13, I just can't help but feel let down, and MY heart has been stabbed, by the very band that mended it when it was stabbed 29 years ago! (yep, I'm 46 in 7 days). I still love you Billie Mike and Tre, but please, appease you're LONG TERM fan base, as well as trying to gain new ones. Peace-out, Goatboy 🐐
