I have two herniated discs, L4/L5 and L5/S1, one of them have caused serious sciatica pain, and the other has made my back quite stiff. The L4/L5 incident happened 6 months ago, and the L5/S1 happened 6 weeks ago. The first incident wasn't that bad, I became stiff for a few weeks, but could go to work and do light exercise. The last incident on the other hand left me completely in bed for 3 weeks. I could barely walk, and I was in so much pain that I barely slept for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks I could walk for a few minutes each time, but with a crooked back, and in tremendous amount of pain.

The last 2 weeks I have started walking close to normal again. I had a lot of pain at first, but I forced myself to walk, and get back to work, even with the pain. Walking and getting back to normal really helped me heal. At work I have a standing desk. I have bought a balance thing that I stand on, and a chair with no back support that I use in addition to my regular chair. We also have a couch at work, so I can lay down when necessary, which I do a lot. What I do during a day is I change positions at least every 30 minutes (at least I try to), and I take walking breaks. If I have a meeting with one person, I ask them if it is possible to do the meeting while we walk outside.

I also have been going to a physiotherapist. I don't know how much that has really helped, but it feels comforting going to a person that examines and logs my progress. I will continue going for a few weeks more. He also gives me a few exercises that I perform from time to time. I try to do them everyday, but I haven't been very consistent with them. I feel like walking is the best exercise for now, even though it still hurst a lot.

To those of you that are in pain. Hang in there. There is a good change you will get better with time, and whatever you do don't stay in bed all day. Try as hard as you can to walk again. Go for several short walks instead of one long.

My doctor and physiotherapist tells me that for the most part this is genetics and bad luck. I've been trying to get as much research on the topic as possible, but most of the research are on such small groups that their results aren't really statistically significant.

So you can't control your genes and the bad luck part. You can control your outlook (stay positive), and you can move as much as possible (motion is the lotion) and you can eat a healthy diet, and drink lots of water. Also, try to stay away from medication if you can. I took pain killers in the beginning, but once I had less pain I stopped even when the doctor prescribed them to me.

Good luck. This is the worst thing I have experienced, but once it got better it made me appreciate my life a lot more!

I suffer from L2 up till S1 disc bulge.
My advice
1- sleep on wooden plank or floor with 1 inch of foam mattress.
Quit spring or foam mattress.
2- sit on plain wooden chair.
3- keep a roll made of towel or foam behind your back at waist line while driving.
4- Go to a chiropractor to align your vertebrae
5-keep your posture upright.
You will feel the difference in one week.

@freestyle bully No ,i didn't take any steriods ,its all naturally, it was quite big even i couldn't walk properly for almost 8 months (the pain was so severe ). You have to do proper excercises for your back muscles slowly slowly don't make any rush and walk walk walk walk whenever gets time ! I hope i helped you , trust me you will definitely healed , always remember our body has remarkable capacity to healed up on its own !! Thanks 🙏

@ashok kumar thanks for replying did u take any steroid shots or all natural healing? And how big was your herniated disk?

ashok kumar

@freestyle bully yeah ! i am almost completely healed now from disc herniation . Yes i had back and leg pain both (sciatica ) .It takes around 2 years to come out from this without any surgical procedure (all naturally), now i am able to do sports activities and doing bodyweight exercises for my back muscles to make them strong enough to bear loads and take sufficient rest in between the days and walk ,walk ,walk always whenever you get time .please be patient it will take time and trust your body and respond according to what your body needs ! i hope it will help you🙏

@ashok kumar I just found out I have a L5 s1 disc bulge to the left. I have back pain when I sit but no leg pain. I been in pain 7 months .Do u have a disc bulge/ back pain or only leg pain. Also I only hurt when I sit not when I'm trying to sleep. Did you heal up completely? If so how long did it take and what did u do to heal ? Please help 😊🙃 Are u 100% healed or do u still have back pain? Did u get surgery? Are you having any complications after surgery?

@Josh D. I am back to working out at the gym, I actually did 3*5 squats yesterday with 97.5kg, and I have been able to progress quite well on all my lifts. I have had a few issues, specially with deadlifts, but I'm trying to stay focused and perform everything with good form so that I keep my back safe.

I think my back will never heal 100%. There is still some pain there, but overall I feel very good and blessed because I can go to work, I can lift heavy, and I can run. There have been some minor incidents after some lifting sessions where I felt some pain, but usually it goes away after a few days. I also think the pain is psychological. Once you have had serious back pain, I think you just become aware of your back more, and notice anything going on there because you are worried it will come back.

I've suffered from herniated disc for 4-5 years and it got worse this past year with sciatica leaving me debilitated from activities and much difficulty with work. When I heard you state "I have been pain free for 3 years and went back to weight lifting." I actually cried. That was truly inspiring to know there is always hope. The other I was laying on my stomach while asleep, my right leg bent(I never do that because it causes pressure on my left herniated disc) my cat was laying on my left ankle (with slight pressure). I didn't want to disturb her so i just stretched my left leg out a little bit and POP!!! I quickly went to sleep because after that I usually am in real pain. I woke up hour in a half later I could move my whole upper half in a way I haven't in years. NO PAIN. So I've been looking for ways to get me back after that freeing moment. I will check out your videos. Thank you for your posting, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for.

@freestyle bully I healed up completely, there is no pain now, it took about 1-2 months to get rid of severe pain in lower back and leg. There were few months of minor pain, but it completely gone after 4-6 months. I also walked about 10000-15000 during this time in order to increase blood circulation. No running because most of the people run incorrectly and cause more stress on their back. Basically McKenzie method is taken from yoga, in my case Bhujangasana asana. I rarely have minor back pain, when it starts I do this asana and pain goes away after some period (few days). One more thing - I sleep on my stomach all the time maybe this was one of the factors for the healing as well, but on the opposite side - it might cause problems with the neck.
