Do What I Can
Greg Laswell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh lady don't you worry
I'm just in a flurry now
But the wind is picking up now
And the new newspapers all over town

And I say what's on my mind
From here on out
And I am fine

Okay yeah
Sure Jim is a friend of mine
But he is running out of time

I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can for you here

Dad whatever you have
I'm sure it's living in me
Cause I'm convinced
That all of this has been the best for me

And I say what's on my mind
Most of the time
And I am fine

Okay yeah
I could barely walk a mile
But I am running now
Running now

I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can

I know you've thought
About everything you could have done
I know your home
Is on fire with the things you've done wrong
Cause I live there too
Yeah I live there too

I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can for you here

I'll do what I can for you here
I'll do what I can

Overall Meaning

In "Do What I Can," Greg Laswell sings about doing whatever he can for someone he cares about. He tells the person not to worry, even though he seems to be in a bit of a panic, with the wind picking up and newspapers scattered all over town. He admits that Jim, a friend of his, is running out of time, but says he'll do what he can for the person he's speaking to. He also talks about his own life and how he's convinced that everything that's happened has been for the best. He says that he speaks his mind most of the time and that he's fine, even though he used to have trouble walking and now he's running.

The second half of the song changes tone slightly, as Laswell addresses a family member (presumably his father) who is struggling with feelings of regret and guilt. He tells the person that he understands how they feel, because he's been there too. But he reassures them that he'll do what he can to help, repeating the refrain "I'll do what I can for you here" several times.

Overall, "Do What I Can" is a song about being there for the people you care about, even when life is turbulent and difficult. Laswell seems to be saying that he's learned to face his own struggles and has come out stronger on the other side, so he's confident he can help others do the same.
