Gregor Samsa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i shield the screams
late at night when she dreams
hold out your hand
a simple gesture
a complex man
please, please, please
don't let go
on my knees, on my knees
don't let go
you taught me how to speak
now i run, i run where i please
you taught me how to speak
now i run, i run where i please

you taught me how to speak
now i run, i run where i please

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gregor Samsa's song Untitled seem to be written from the perspective of someone who is experiencing a complex, possibly turbulent relationship. The opening lines, "I shield the screams late at night when she dreams" suggest that the singer is close to someone who is haunted by their own thoughts and emotions. The singer feels the need to "shield" the other person from their own pain, perhaps out of a sense of duty or obligation.

The lines "hold out your hand, a simple gesture, a complex man" suggest that the singer is both simple and complex. They may be struggling to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but at the same time they are deeply introspective and self-aware. The repetition of "please don't let go" and "on my knees, on my knees" implies a sense of desperation and neediness.

The last three lines of the song, "you taught me how to speak, now I run, I run where I please" suggest that the singer has been empowered by the relationship, but it's unclear whether this is a positive or negative thing. It could be interpreted as the singer breaking free from the constraints of the relationship and finding their own voice, or it could be a sign of the relationship deteriorating and the singer fleeing. Ultimately, the meaning of the lyrics is left up to interpretation, but they suggest a complicated and emotionally charged relationship.

SPOILERS FOR THE NOVEL

I really like the adaptation but I’m wondering why the artist didn’t include the sister, Grete, nor the commissioner as they both play a tremendous role in the novel.
Can someone explain it to me?
I also feel like it would’ve been better if Gregor died the way he did in the book, because his father killed him and not his sister nor his mother as Kafka is known for the bad relationship he had with his father and in every single one of his stories the father figure is portrayed as a narcissist and egoist whom doesn’t appreciate his son.

Nevertheless I think the animation is really beautiful and well done! I was just wondering whether there’s a meaning behind these changes

Hi! Thanks for your comment and thoughts!

The girl in the short was his sister. I decided to eliminate Gregor's mother.

Overall, the story was loosely adapted and shortened for the sake of saving time. It was my thesis work in the fourth year of animation bachelor program in Sheridan College. I had to do an animation short in 8 months just by myself. I had composer and sound designer and bit off help from my friends colouring some animation scenes and helping with compositing of some more tech heavy shots but had to rely on myself for completing the film.

I really loved Metamorphosis when I read it in school and really wanted to try and give it a shot enterpreting it. Ideally if I had a team of animators and more time I would see Metamorphosis being at least 30 minutes film. I would like to include all the details and psychological aspect of it as well as a story build up leading to the death of Gregor.

So when I was adapting it and thinking of the way how to shorten it, I thought of Portrait of Dorian Gray. The final scene where Dorian becomes what he was on the picture of himself. It inspired the alternative ending of my short. It became a reverse metamorphosis or perhaps metamorphosis never happened in real and it was Gregor's family's perception of him the whole time.

I found that death like it happened in the book would need more character exploration for it to make sense visually. However, I knew that my alternation of the story will distort original novel and create different feeling for people who enjoyed Metamorphosis as it is.

Overall, it was a tough experience and my very first short film. It really made me appreciate written stories and film making more as different forms of art that create one feeling with different methods and techniques. But sometimes they do make us feel not the same about the story that being told.

Again thank you for your feedback and I really think that storytelling of all different forms have to be free for interpretation by the audience. It is more fun and beautiful to create a dialouge rather than teaching someone what one thinks is right.

I loved the animation and the adaptation that the animator made, but it’s inaccurate compared to the Franz Kafka’s novel. I’ll give several reasons why.

1. Gregor’s mom for some reason doesn’t exist in this adaptation, there is no backstory of her and she neither appears in the house portraits, so either I’m gonna assume that the mom died or the animator just didn’t add her or forgot about her.
2. During the time when Gregor was late for work, there was also his office manager with the family asking about Gregor, but even he doesn’t appear in the adaptation.
3. There was a bunch of important points in the Kafka novel which is missing from this adaption, especially one where Gregor’s mom and sister are cleaning his room and there a special portrait in Gregor’s room called the “Lady in furs” in which Gregor’s protects it from when his mother and sister tried to move all the furniture, which leads up to the part where his mother faints and his father throws apples at him, but it doesn’t happen due to the odd abscene of Gregor’s mom
4. A charwoman, a maid, and three borders are also absent from the adaptation, I also noticed that only just three characters are in the adaptation.
5. During the part where Grete, (Gregor’s sister) preforms in a violin play, but it just seams very dead. The three boarders that I mentioned before were supposed to be watching the performance and the father too, but in the adaptation, the father doesn’t even care and it’s very empty.
6. In this adaptation, Gregor dies immediately from Grete smashing her violin on his back. But in the novel, he actually gets killed by his father by him throwing apples at Gregor, and it takes place right before the violin performance and it took Gregor about a few weeks to die due to starvation.
He also doesn’t turn human when dies, but he just remains as a rotting corpse.

I find myself wishing that the book had ended this way. With Gregor transforming back into his human self. Imagine what the family's reaction would have been had they realized he was conscious and could understand them all along.

@user-cq8mb9os9o

According to the original, they (especially father and mother) would be rather angry than sad, because Kafka wanted to point out what they see Gregor only as a breadwinner, and he`s not interesting to them in any other way. But, Kafka has the unbreakable rule: everything must end in the WORST way possible.

@zephyros2522

@Віктор Усатенко Yes it in itself is rather heartbreaking. I just wish they could have felt the same heartwrenching pain I felt when Gregor died. I feel like Gregor was so wasted on them.

@xxjagodzianaxx6801

According to some sources his metamorphosis into a insect was just a metaphore for him becoming diffrent, like he may have acquired some deformalities or phsycological disorders etc. Idk if it's actually truth but it sure can feel this way.

@chiefhussam

@xxjagodzianaxx i think it could be a mix of both. him actually becoming this gross ass vermin and developing disorders and such

@user-fo1wi4rv8s

@Zephyros it is more life-like, when, as Kafka showed to us, your family\friends are never to know of your inner struggles and thoughs. even if they wanted to, - which is rather doubtful

My 10th grade English class has just watched your adaptation of Metamorphosis. After reading the book version, we are all very pleasantly surprised at how your much your shorter version of this story really captured the theme, tone and climax of the book. Thank you for your efforts and we look to watching more adaptations that you and your team create. Sincerely our English Class at SBHS
