1. The US post-rock, shoegaze band are originally from Richmond, Virginia, and now based in Brooklyn. They formed in 2000, took their name from writer Franz Kafka - author of the short story The Metamorphosis. The current members are Champ Bennett, Nikki King, Billy Bennett, Jeremiah Klinger, Cory Bise, Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya. After the release of two EPs, Gregor Samsa and 27:36, and two splits with The Silent Type and Red Sparowes, Gregor Samsa delivered their much anticipated debut full-length 55:12, composed of eight songs submerged in dreamy, multi-layered post-rock atmospherics. In their next album, Gregor Samsa took a new approach to composition, both in process and instrumentation. The result was Rest, released in May of 2008 on Kora Records (US) and Own Records (Europe).

Abutting Dismantling
Gregor Samsa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I won't let us grow weary.
But all the neighbors clearly
care for their own landscape.
They perfect shapes and states,
leaving ours dry and blank.
What a way to be loved.
In time I will lose all focus,
forgetting the moments that I had once missed.
I will see the end of all this.
Then you'll go, I'll stay and wait,
wishing you'd not left.
The song Abutting Dismantling by Gregor Samsa explores the theme of longing for permanence in a world that is constantly in a state of fluidity. The lyrics suggest that the singer is aware of the fragility of their relationship with the person they are speaking to, and as a result, they promise to be more careful and not let their relationship fall apart. However, the singer is also aware of the fact that the world around them is constantly changing and that they are not in control of their environment. The neighbors are more concerned about their own landscape, leaving the singer's relationship feeling dry and blank in comparison.
The singer seems to be struggling with the passage of time, and how it is impossible to hold on to the moments that once were. They predict that they will lose focus and ultimately forget what they once had, bringing them to the end of their relationship. The line "What a way to be loved" suggests a tone of regret, as if the singer is disappointed with the way things turned out and wishes they could have held on to the moments that made their relationship special.
Overall, Abutting Dismantling is a poignant reflection on the ephemeral nature of life and the struggle to hold on to what is most precious to us.

Just discover this great piece in 2022. I really can't believe it's 14 years since it was released, and the world has become even more dismantling than 14 years ago.

I am amazed at how many praised this track and in the same breath left spiteful messages full of hate about other people. There is beauty in sympathy and tolerance too.

Why are "artists" in pop so popular when there is music like this that connects you to everything you hold dear and has you ponder the deepest thoughts within you? I can think of nothing more beautiful, both musically and mentally
