High Hopes
Gregorian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running, before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The night of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards -- but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfuried
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Eneumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing

The endless river
Forever and ever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gregorian's "High Hopes" describe the longing of the singer to return to a place of wonder and excitement that he and his friends once experienced. The opening lines set the stage, taking the listener beyond the horizon of their youth into a world where "magnets and miracles" are possible. The singer reflects on the boundless nature of their thoughts in those days, before the "ringing of the division bell" signaled a change.

As the song continues, we hear about the road that the singer and his friends traveled, and the memories that haunt them still. There are echoes of regret and sadness as they look back on the dreams they once had, knowing that time has taken them away. The imagery of the "myriad small creatures" trying to tie them to the ground speaks to the weight of responsibility and the daily grind that can erode a sense of wonder and possibility.

Despite all of this, the singer is still drawn to the horizon, searching for something that he knows he cannot find. The song's climax comes when he describes reaching a "dreamed of world" at a higher altitude, but even here he finds that he is "encumbered forever by desire and ambition." The grass was greener, the light was brighter, but these things have faded with time. And yet, the singer knows that he will always be drawn back to this place of wonder and dreams, despite the fact that he has been down this road so many times before.

Beautiful version

Of all Pink Floyd songs, this one seems to lend itself almost perfectly to the Gregorian Chant interpretation. Still, I would dearly love to hear the Gregorian Chant rendition of 'Arnold Layne'!
