Running up That Hill
Gregorian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It doesn't hurt me
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear 'bout the deal that I'm making?
You, you and me

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could oh...

You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Ooh there is thunder in our hearts
Is there so much hate for the ones we love
'Tell me we both matter don't we
You
You and me
You and me won't be unhappy

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with god
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could oh...

You
You and me
You and me won't be unhappy

Come on, baby
Come on, darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Come on, angel
Come on, come on, darling
Let's exchange the experience, oh

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no ploblems.

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no ploblems.

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no ploblems.

And if I only could

Be running up that hill
With no problems.

Overall Meaning

Running Up That Hill by Gregorian is a song that takes a deep look at the dynamics of a relationship. Though the song is an interpretation of Kate Bush’s original song of the same name, the Gregorian version lays more emphasis on the intensity of the emotions involved in a relationship. The song begins by highlighting the intriguing question of whether or not pain is necessary for any relationship to work. The lyrics suggest that the singer is not affected by the pain in the relationship as the words say, “It doesn't hurt me. Do you want to feel how it feels? Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?”

The chorus is the most memorable part of the song, and it conveys the message that the singer is willing to do anything to save the relationship. The words say, “And if I only could, I'd make a deal with God, and I'd get him to swap our places. Be running up that road, be running up that hill, be running up that building.” The person is saying that they would be willing to put in a lot of effort to make things work even if it requires them to take on a lot of trouble. The idea of swapping places with a partner in order to gain insight into their perspective is also present in this passage.

The song ends on a positive note when the singer invites their partner to exchange experiences, indicating that they are willing to work on the relationship. The ultimate goal of the singer is to be able to “Be running up that hill with no problems.”, which means that they want to overcome every obstacle that their relationship may encounter.

When I was a little kid, something like 9, I heard my big brothers listening to Gregorian. I was like wow how beautiful music. Gregorian was the first band I really started to listen and for four years it was the only band I listened to. 9 years later it's still my favourite band and also my brothers' but we listen very different types of music (for example Mötley Crue), too. Yeah I think there's that family thing very often if you listen to gregorian :D

I have loved this song forever and I thought no one could touch Kate's version and then I heard Placebo's and I really liked it-not sure it made Kate's level. And now this - it is stunning.

I always loved the original, and I like when remakes are actually good. This song was always a very emotive one, and still is...

I love this version. Beautiful. Loved Kate Bush's, loved Within Temptation's, and now I have a third version to love. No nasally whiny male voices for me thank you.
