He was a member of the relatively unknown Canadian folk-rock band The Stickpeople during the 90s. Hoskins released his first solo album in 2001 titled The King of Good Intentions, which was compared to both "the solemnity of Daniel Lanois (without the studio effects) and the bounciness of Paul Simon (without the 20-piece backing band)" by Jason Schneider of Exclaim magazine.

Hoskins has been noted for his songwriting talent and excellent voice by several publications, including The Edmonton Sun, Exclaim, The Record and Now Magazine.

In 2007, Hoskins released the album Alone in the Mayor's House... almost which was recorded inside the old mayors house in Ontario, Canada. The only musicians to make an appearance on the recording are Hoskins himself playing the guitar and singing, and drummer Gary Craig.

That was amazing. Some of the most haunting vocals I've ever heard and that is probably one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever heard. It filled my mind with images of dark, foggy nights in a Noir-esque city.

I listened to the song and did not hear him go flat consistently at all. I have a good ear for this and its possibly the style of music he is singing here that makes you think he is flat. The rising notes actually make the song have the sound he was apparently looking for. Well done!

Bravo! What an excellent performance and song. This is one of those songs that is first of all very risky as an artist and tremendously difficult to pull off. With the vocal up front, exposed raw/bare-naked emotions and minimal guitar accompaniment, Gregory Hoskins blazes a new trail that defines him as a true 21st century artistic talents. GB/LOL Ray.

I agree with you 100% that CandyRat is showcasing artists with unique talents. However, like you said, Andy McKee is what originally grabbed your attention. I first discovered CandyRat through Andy as well, and then subscribed to find guitar masters like Antoine and Don Ross. The past year CandyRat has included many artists with their unique styles which are different than those of the fingerstyle acoustic players.

Perhaps the artist's commitment to acoustic purity prevents him from mic-ing his axe. Nonetheless, like you said, a good song. Through this vid I ended up surfing similar links and found a tremendous site I didn't know existed. It is CandyRatrecords. They have an amazing group of artists, acoustic and otherwise. Well.. performance - sublime I've listened to a lot of music in my 41 yrs..in all my artists of all time lists..Gregory is in that camp. Gregory Hoskins will perform again this summer at the CGF..(might as well let that cat out of the bag right now :) He achieves what anyone of us could ever hope to; alone with just our thoughts and our guitars..and just to let another cat out of the bag, GH will either percede or follow Pierre Bensusan...so be sure to bring your signifigant other ;-)

Have you checked out all the artists on CandyRats' site? They have alot of people that aren't contemporary fingerstyle players or even electric virtuosos. They even have a vocal section on their site from which you can buy music. They even have a bass section for those of us that can't get enough Pastorius :P

cool~ I'll check CandyRat out. Thanks! Back to the mic thing, the guitar is mic'd even if not really separately from the voice. But I count 3 mics in the video and that's if there's not two more in the room (which it doesn't really sound like). The guitar drops out some and I was saying maybe there were too many mics causing some phase cancellation. Or, it sounds compressed too -sometimes that can knock stuff down too hard.
