Active since 2003, Godreau initially enjoyed independent success with 2 EPs and a full length album selling a total of 15,000 copies.

Originally from Medfield, Massachusetts, Godreau moved to upstate New York when she was twelve. This was where she learned a number of instruments, including piano, clarinet, oboe, violin and viola before settling on her '$70 Christmas gift': the guitar.

Godreau then took on the pseudonym Gregory and the Hawk to avoid being pigeonholed as a singer-songwriter, despite ironically citing her influences as Nick Drake, Liz Phair and PJ Harvey. The name was derived from her brother, Gregory, and his imaginary childhood hawk. This was when she released her demo EP, including early versions of the popular "Boats and Birds" and "Isabelle".

my first love sent me this song, saying it reminds them of me. and i nearly cried. i thought i was straight back then, but right at that moment, i knew that they could be a pigeon and i would love them just the same.

This might sound really silly but I sing this to my elderly cat every night, it started as a joke, but it slowly turned into a nightly thing, a few minutes every night to spend time with her, to pet her and give her kisses. She seemed to like it, and we got really close. Tonight she passed away (12/10/21) it really hurts. She was my closest pet and my childhood pet. I'm currently listing to this song to cope

The house still feels really empty, I occasionally walk past the kitchen where she was most and except to see her, only to be hit with the fact she's not there. It's been surprisingly difficult dealing with her death. She was my cat, she helped me through a lot of bad times, times I didn't think I'd survive. I have never been without her, she's been in my life since I was only a few months old. I miss her so much, but I know she had a long (she was 21ish years old, we got her when she was 4ish) and very loving life, and a warm place to pass. Even though I miss her, and it's taking a long time to heal, I'm happy she was in my life

One of my closest childhood friends showed me this song when it first came out and I have been obsessed ever since. She was a dancer and would love to dance to this song. She loved to experiment with various levels of consciousness and did a lot of hallucinogens, constantly searching for the meaning of life. I've been trying to find this song for 5 years. I used to listen to this when I was having bad days with my stepmom when I was a younger. I would always imagine as kid that I had a healthy mother loving me and holding me. As a kid this really had helped through life now I'm almost and adult and this gives all the cherished memories I had with my mother before her schizophrenia had taken her ability to take care of me. My stepmother has been physically abusive towards me and this is one of the few songs I listened to when I was a bit younger :)

I long ago dedicated this song to my old aged dog, she is now almost 15 and today is her last, and couldn't help but cry and come back to her song. This song means so much to me. It reminds me just of my ex best friend. When she changed she considered us just friends and it hurt.
