Originally from Medfield, Massachusetts, Godreau moved to upstate New York when she was twelve. This was where she learned a number of instruments, including piano, clarinet, oboe, violin and viola before settling on her '$70 Christmas gift': the guitar.
Godreau then took on the pseudonym Gregory and the Hawk to avoid being pigeonholed as a singer-songwriter, despite ironically citing her influences as Nick Drake, Liz Phair and PJ Harvey. The name was derived from her brother, Gregory, and his imaginary childhood hawk. This was when she released her demo EP, including early versions of the popular "Boats and Birds" and "Isabelle".

I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black, and you show off your light
I live to let you shine(x2)
But you can skyrocket away from me
And never come back of you find another galaxy
Far from here
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by
If you'll be my boat
I'll be your sea
A depth of pure blue
Just to probe curiosity
Ebbing and flowing
And pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free(x2)
But you can set sail to the west if you want to
And past the horizon
'Till I can't even see you
Far from here
Where the beaches are wide
Just leave me your wake to remember you by
If you'll be my star
I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me
And come out at night
When I turn jet black
And you show off your light
I live to let you shine(x2)
But you cam skyrocket away from me
And never come back if you
Find another galaxy
Far from here
With more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by(x2)
The song "Boats and Birds" by Gregory and the Hawk can be interpreted as a metaphorical representation of a relationship between two people, where the primary focus is on the idea of freedom and the need to explore beyond what is known. The song has two distinct parts or stanzas, with each one focused on a separate metaphorical idea.
In the first stanza, the singer says, "If you'll be my star, I'll be your sky." This represents her willingness to support her partner and to provide a safe place for them to hide and to come out at night, when the singer is "jet black" and her partner can "show off their light." This can be seen as a metaphor for the balance and support necessary in any relationship. The singer explains that she lives to let her partner shine and be their best selves, but that she is also aware that they may need to leave her to explore other galaxies and find their own freedom.
In the second stanza, the singer says, "If you'll be my boat, I'll be your sea." This represents a different aspect of the relationship, where the singer is inviting her partner to use her as a source of exploration and freedom. The idea of being pushed by a breeze alludes to the fact that the journey may not always be easy, but the singer is willing to be that source of support and adventure for her partner. Once again, the theme of freedom is explored, with the singer acknowledging that her partner may need to sail away and find new adventures in other places.
Overall, the song is a beautiful expression of the complexities of love and relationships, using metaphorical language to explore the themes of freedom, support, and exploration.

let me give a bit of a happier story.
my first love sent me this song, saying it reminds them of me. and i nearly cried. i thought i was straight back then, but right at that moment, i knew that they could be a pigeon and i would love them just the same.
they confessed after, and i screamed in joy.
they were my moon and stars.
though it didn't work out, they will always hold a precious part of me.
because at least they left me their stardust to remember them by.
thank you, demi

I know this song is about one sided love but I get a big parent-kid vibe. Parents want to let their kids to shine and grow up to do great things but they still want things to remember them by.
@LittlexMissxRaven
Same. This makes me think of my little brother - he's 17 years younger than me, and due to certain circumstances, I had to help raise him for a while. I'd do just about anything to help make him happy.

Yea, I've always sung this to my daughter since she was a baby. She's 7 now and still asks me to sing it to her 😊❤

This song was chosen by a 5 year old boy to play at his dad's funeral - safe to say there were no more dry eyes when he started singing along.
