Together they won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 1963, and went on to represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 1963 with the song Dansevise ("Dancing tune") with music by Otto Francker and lyrics by Sejr Volmer-Sørensen. The song won the competition. No other Danish song would take first place in the Eurovision competition again until the year 2000 when the Olsen Brothers won with their song, "Fly On The Wings Of Love".

Jørgen Ingmann was born on 26 April 1925 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Grethe Clemmensen was born in 1938 in Denmark. They met in 1955, were married in 1956 and got divorced in 1975. Grethe Ingmann died on 18 August 1990 in Denmark.

Jørgen Ingmann's version of Jerry Lordan's instrumental "Apache" (which hit no 1 in US Singles' list in 1961) was successful largely due to EMI's omission to publish The Shadows' original 1960 version in time for USA. The cover version of the Dane became first and The Shadows' hit could not pace.

I learnt to play this rhythm and lead back in 1961. Took me weeks. The guy who taught me was a 16 year old budding guitarist ,name of Albert Lee.
Still play it today .Awesome reminder of the fabulous 60s.

john hodges Ingmann plays about a ton of notes that Marvin never did, every one perfect. The skeleton’s the same (mostly) but Ingmann puts far more meat on those bones, and zero fat. Marvin’s playing is inspiring, Ingmann’s is also sublime.

Rest in peace, Jorgen. He died last year at the age of 89. I loved this as a little kid, best version of Apache ever. This and Telstar were my favorite instrumentals in those days.

I think no one ever succeeded because Ingman made it sound like a theme from a western movie. Ingmann's version simply sounds Western and nobody ever seemed to understand that this is a song about the West . Which makes it all the more remarkable that somebody from Denmark was able to grokk that and translate it into the Masterpiece that this is.

The Shadows never made an impact in the U.S. back then. Their version to the original recording was a big hit in the U.K. as was the group its self. They were pre-British Invasion and somehow did not participate it when it arrived in the States. Jörgen Ingmann, as great as he was, maybe just got lucky thanks to the radio DJs. I like this version as well.

Fortunately for Ingmann, The Brit group The Shadows were involved in a lawsuit with an American R&B group by the same name and did very little to promote their cover of "Apache" in the U.S. Ingmann during his career was an exceptional guitarist who added his own special touch to this song. I haven't learned this tune, but I know from my classical guitar studies that harmonics are tough to get right and fully projected for everyone to hear, especially when you're unamplified (the classical style disdains any electric amplification). Example: Liona Boyd's transcription and arrangement of Erik Satie's Gymnopedié No. 1. TOUGH harmonics.

During that five-year period between the Day the Music Died in 1959 and the Beatles arriving in 1964 ... the US Top Ten was up-for-grabs ... and Jorgen reached #2 with "Apache". Also, on the many Atlantic Records albums we had, the sleeve for the record itself often showcased other Atlantic releases ... and one often saw "The Many Guitars of Jorgen Ingmann" featured. RIP.

Found a copy of the 45 on the Erie Lackawanna railroad tracks amidst rocks and debris in northern New Jersey when I was 15. It was trashed, but I played it to death. (I'm 62 and I still have it!) Love Ingmann's version best of all. "Telstar," "Sleepwalk," "Out of Limits," "Walk Don't Run" -- a lot of great instrumentals on the airwaves back then.

Stunning record. He did all of it on guitar, including the percussion bits. I was a little kid and this was one of the records that started me on guitar. I now play professionally thanks to music like this.
