Good As Gold
Greyson Chance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see the hole in the heart that you try
To fill with a drink
I see the light at the end of the dark
It might make you think
About where you′ve been, babe
And what you've done
Yeah, I know you hate this town
You′re not the only one

I know you're hurting
And you're feeling sold
I know it hurts when
You don′t know where to go
And when you′re tied up
By the past you hold
You've got to know
That you are good as gold

I see the crack in your ribs when you fell
Over your heels
I see you hurt by the words when he said
Love it ain′t real
But let me hold you
And tell you what I see
You are the light of the day
You mean so much to me

I know you're hurting
And you′re feeling sold
I know it hurts when
You don't know where to go
And when you′re tied up
By the past you hold
You've got to know
That you are good as gold
Oh, good as gold
Oh, good as gold
Oh, good as gold
You've got to know
That you are good as gold

Shoulder to shoulder
Yeah babe, I′m on for the ride
We can run far away
Stay in the heat of July
Oh, tonight
Push your troubles aside
We′ll be alright, babe
(Good as gold)
Yeah
You are good as gold
Hey

I know you're hurting
And you′re feeling sold
I know it hurts when
You don't know where to go
And when you′re tied up
By the past you hold
You've got to know
That you are good as gold
Oh, yeah you are good as gold
(Yeah, you are)
Oh, good as gold
(You′ve got to got to know babe)
Oh, good as gold

You've got to know
That you are good as gold

Overall Meaning

Greyson Chance's song "Good as Gold" is a heartwarming anthem of comfort for someone who has gone through significant trauma, reminding them that they are as valuable as gold, even if they might not realize it themselves. In the first verse, Greyson addresses the singer's struggle with alcoholism and depression by acknowledging that the singer is trying to fill the void in their heart with alcohol. Greyson also acknowledges the struggles the singer has experienced, making it clear that the town is not the only thing they hate. Greyson sings that he can see the light at the end of the dark, and while the singer might ponder their past, they can take comfort in the fact that their pain is not unique.

In the second verse, Greyson discusses how the singer has been hurt by romantic relationships in their past. Greyson then tells the singer that they are valuable and shaped with gold by acknowledging how important they are to him. The chorus of the song follows the theme of the song, with Greyson repeating the phrase "you are good as gold" to the singer, urging them to recognize their value as a person. In the bridge, Greyson reinforces the message of the song, assuring the singer that they are worth as much as gold, and that they can forget their troubles for a while

I’m looking through the comments and the majority of what I’m seeing is people praising Greyson for his talent and how he shouldn’t stop making music, and that’s okay. I understand that. But the message of this video runs deeper to me than just his vocals. I was born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and finally got out when I was 6. I have experienced the pain and anguish that this town carries first hand. The alcoholism and the violence, the poverty and the neglect. But I have had the privilege to be surrounded by my own Lakota culture this town carries on. This will always be my home and seeing it finally get some recognition makes me so happy.

I live in south dakota and honestly I just found this song and it's so true, the reservations here have a lot of hurt and violence and alcoholic people and its sad.

You have a chance to step up and find a way to make the old ways of your ancestors new again. Your tribe is most likely lost in the white man's world and needs to relearn ancient traditions. Best!

I love how Greyson connects his personal experience with the Lakota tribe. This is extremely beautiful when Greyson's music and the special scene of Lakota fits together. More than perfect. Always support the best music.
