And no one can ask you what you think
Hi, hi, bitter heart, you look asleep (hi, hi, hi)
And no one can ask you what you think (hi, hi, hi)
Feeling no emotion
Step into the ocean
Now my mind is everywhere
Walk into the water
Boiling as it's hotter
I was looking everywhere
And drowning is the only thought I have
'Cause every time you look away
I think I love you more each day
'Cause every time you look away
I think I love you more each day
Hi, hi, bitter heart and you look at me
And no one can ask you what you think
Hi, hi, bitter heart and you look asleep
And no one can ask you what you think
'Cause every time you walk away
I think I love you more with each day
(Every time you look away
I think I love you more each day)
Feeling no emotion
Step into the ocean
Now my mind is everywhere
And drowning is the only thought I have
Walk into the water
Boiling as it's hotter
I was looking everywhere
And drowning was the only thought I had oh whoa oh oh oh
In Grimes's song Ambrosia, she explores themes of unrequited love and the consequences of allowing oneself to drown in those emotions. The lyrics are directed towards a lover who is described as having a "bitter heart" and being unresponsive to the singer's feelings. The chorus, "every time you look away, I think I love you more each day," captures the intensity of the singer's emotions and her inability to escape them.
The song's opening lyrics, "feeling no emotion, step into the ocean," convey a sense of surrender to the overwhelming emotions at play. As the singer steps into the ocean and drowns, it becomes the "only thought" she has. This imagery is repeated throughout the song, with the singer "looking everywhere" for something to anchor her, only to find herself drowning deeper and deeper.
The repeated use of "hi, hi" and "oh whoa oh oh oh" in the lyrics lends the song a dreamlike quality, enhancing the sense of being lost in a sea of emotions. The use of different instruments and sounds, including distorted guitars and electronic beats, creates a unique soundscape that reflects the intensity and confusion of the emotions being explored in the song.
