REALiTi
Grimes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When we were young, we used to get so close to it
And you were scared and you were beautiful
I wanna peer over the edge and see in death
If we are always the same

Oh, I fear that no life will ever be like this again
'Cause your love kept me alive and it made me insane, oh, yeah
There were moments when it seemed okay
(But I go back alone)
Where do you go? Oh, where do you stay?
(I go back alone)
There was a time when the music would play
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality

Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality

When we were young, we used to get so close to it
And you were scared and you were beautiful
I wanna peer over the edge and see in death
If we are always the same, oh, yeah

There were moments when it seemed okay
(But I go back alone)
Where do you go? Oh, where do you stay?
(I go back alone)
Oh, oh, oh-oh, oh

Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality

Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality
To reality

Oh, baby, every
To reality
Oh, baby, every (Give me a sign)
Oh oh oh oh oh

Oh, baby, every (Give me a sign)
Oh, baby, every (Give me a sign)
Oh, baby, every (Give me a sign)
Oh, oh, oh-oh, oh

Oh, baby, every (Give me a sign)
Oh, baby, every
Oh, baby, every
Oh, baby, every

It sounds like corporate art

Break bread with an infidel
And plunge into the dark

Overall Meaning

The song REALiTi by Grimes is a introspective and melancholic reflection on youth, love, mortality and the harsh reality of life. The lyrics describe the nostalgia for a time when the world seemed full of possibilities and the singer felt alive thanks to the love of someone else. ā€œWhen we were young, we used to get so close to it/ And you were scared and you were beautiful/ I wanna peer over the edge and see in death/ If we are always the sameā€ encapsulates both the recklessness and the beauty of youth, and the desire to know what lies beyond death. However, this feeling of invincibility was short-lived, and now the singer perceives the world as a mountain to climb and every morning as a struggle just to cope with reality. ā€œOh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb/ Taking all my time/ Oh, when I get up, this is what I see/ Welcome to realityā€. The repetition of ā€œwhere do you go? Oh, where do you stay?ā€ emphasizes the loneliness and isolation the singer feels, despite the fact that they were not always alone before.

Overall, REALiTi evokes powerful emotions of nostalgia, longing, fear and sadness. Grimes' ethereal and dreamy voice adds to the haunting nature of the song, evoking the listener's own memories of a time when things were simpler and more beautiful. The song also acknowledges the harsh realities of life, and the feeling that the world is not always welcoming, and that we need to struggle every day just to survive.

@@weirdo66636 in my opinion, she publicly disavowed her old music to further her career; to become a "new" version of herself.

The New York Times (which never printed a word about her earlier work), wrote in 2014 people should prepare for her "next album."

In 2015 she put our Art Angels and suddenly everyone in media (who ignored her existence before) carried on as though her talent was only just discovered.

(Just my view, btw.)

Yeash except it's so high energy it's hard to imagine she could keep it up if you were there watching her dance rather than it being all chopped up of her vids

This song has the same vibe as waking up at 5am but it's for something you are excited to do.

@gpg000

Omg I love this analogy

@Brandon-eh4tz

Itā€™s easier to just stay up to 5am and get excited over the song, like Iā€™m doing now xD

@andrewakrause

Why is that analogy so entirely accurate?

Making this my alarm song now. ..
