In the water
I, I sing my songs, I play
I, I know, I play it myself
Oh, you know
Oh, my
Oh oh oh oh oh
What have you done?
I've made my head and I don't see nothing
You go ahead and I know it's nothing
1, 2, 3
I can't see
And I, baby I don't wanna know
They can say I can't sing
But right now I don't wanna know
Boy, I can't see
Everything in front of me
But baby I am ready to go
Anywhere you know that when I'm in that place from Bordentown
Baby, I'm ready to go
Boy, I can't see
Everything in front of me
But baby I am ready to go
Anywhere you know that when I'm in that place from Bordentown
You see me, I'm ready to go
The lyrics of Grimes' song Sagrad are somewhat enigmatic and open-ended. The piece begins with the phrase "Oh, my darling / In the water", which appears to refer to some sort of surrender, immersion, or baptismal rebirth into the pool of the unconscious or of the creative psyche. Grimes then starts to sing and play her own music, highlighting her artistic independence and empowerment. In the next verse, the phrase "What have you done?" suggests someone else's expectations or judgments that have somehow affected her or her creativity. The key phrase of the song "I've made my head and I don't see nothing / You go ahead and I know it's nothing" expresses Grimes' commitment to her own vision and her disregard for external criticism or distractions. She then counts "1, 2, 3" and admits her momentary blindness or confusion, but asserts that she does not want to get discouraged or deterred by naysayers or gatekeepers who may question her ability to sing.
The chorus of Sagrad reinforces the message of resilience, willingness, and adventure, as Grimes declares her readiness to go anywhere, suggesting a desire for exploration, novelty, and freedom. The final lines of the song "Boy, I can't see / Everything in front of me / But baby I am ready to go / Anywhere you know that when I'm in that place from Bordentown / You see me, I'm ready to go" add a romantic and intimate dimension to the song, as if the singer is addressing a lover, friend, or muse who inspires her to keep pushing forward and to embrace the unknown.
