Grinspoon changed their sound to more mainstream rock by their 2002 album, New Detention, gaining fans and peaking at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Charts; similarly 2007's Alibis & Other Lies also reached No. 2. Their 2004 album, Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills, which peaked at No. 4, won the 2005 'Best Rock Album Award' at the ARIA Music Awards.
The band was signed to Universal Records in United States by late 1998, they were promoted by the songs "Champion", which featured in Gran Turismo 3; "Post Enebriated Anxiety", which was on the international version of Guide to Better Living; "Chemical Heart", via the internet; and a cover of the Prong song "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck", from Grinspoon's Pushing Buttons EP, which was included on ECW: Extreme Music.
On 4 December 2013, they announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus to pursue individual projects.

Let's not beat around the bush
I got my hands in the air
With my head down look
Disease please pay phone the back of my car
Automatic teller
Man your gonna go far
Flacid the best in the world
Apology glitter for the flitter with the punk girl
God knows you like it
We all know about you sucker
Man your gonna go far
Your world champion now
Your world champion now
Champion, champion
You want to champion or be a homeboy
I'm a macho fucking number one champion
You want a champion or be a homeboy
Macho fucking number one champion
You want champion
Or be a homeboy
I'm so sorry!
The lyrics to Grinspoon's song Champion speak about the desire to be a champion, but not just any champion, a macho number one champion who everyone admires. The song starts with the singer giving the listener a reality check, that if they want to be a champion, they need to work hard for it. The lines "Let's not beat around the bush, I got my hands in the air with my head down look" imply that the singer is being honest and straightforward with the listener, which is necessary to achieve greatness.
The lyrics later reference various things like a disease, a payphone, an automatic teller, apology glitter, and a punk girl. It's unclear whether these things have any specific meaning or if they are just random associations. The repetition of the line "Man, you're gonna go far" seems to imply that the listener is on the right track toward becoming a champion.
The chorus is very simple, with just the repetition of the word "champion" three times. The second half of the song is more aggressive, with the singer challenging the listener to choose between being a champion or a "homeboy" and proclaiming themselves as the "macho fucking number one champion." However, the song ends with the line "I'm so sorry!", which could be interpreted as a sarcastic way of acknowledging that not everyone can be a champion.

I remember hearing this song on a crusty demons video. I searched for their album in the states, but it wasn't available. I ended up in Perth, Australia and found this album in a record store. Guide to a better living was an amazing album!
