Southern Point
Grizzly Bear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our haven on
The southern point is calling us
Our haven on
The southern point is calling us
And faced with all
The obvious, she'll carry us
Avert your eyes from all of this
We'll make it all back

In the end
You'll never find
You'll never find
In the end (You'll never find me now)
In the end (You'll never find me now)
You'll never find (But I'll return to you)
You'll never find (When you return to me)

In the end

In the end
You'll never find
You'll never find
In the end (You'll never find me now)
In the end (You'll never find me now)
You'll never find (But I'll return to you)
You'll never find (When you return to me)

In regards to the last word
It's not the last you'll hear
I never find any other
I could ever
I could ever

Never say it's the last one
It's not the last one
I never find any other
I could ever
I could ever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Grizzly Bear's "Southern Point" paint a picture of a haven at the southern point that is calling out to the singer. This haven will carry them through all the obvious challenges of life. They urge the listener to avert their eyes from all the distractions of life and focus on this haven. By doing so, they will make everything back that they may have lost. The refrain of the song is 'In the end, you'll never find me now, but I'll return to you when you return to me.' The main character is telling the listener that this haven will be waiting for them always, and even if they become lost, they will find their way back eventually. The song ends with the singer reiterating that any other haven they might search for will never compare to this one at the southern point.

The theme of the song is hope and perseverance. Life will throw challenges our way, but as long as we hold on to hope and seek refuge in the southern point, we will overcome them. The southern point is ambiguous and could be interpreted as different things for different people. It could represent a place of solace, a particular person, or a state of mind. Regardless of what it represents, the southern point is the place where we find peace and security.

I heard a street performer do this song in the center of Ljubljana about a year ago. I still can't stop thinking about it, we performed Creep by Radiohead together afterwards. I wish I would have kept in contact with him, he was the coolest person I've ever had the chance to randomly meet. Don't even know his name. Anyhow, if you see this, thanks for making a teenager's day one of the most memorable ever.
