Purple Haze
Groove Armada; Nappy Roots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things just don't seem the same
Actin' funny, but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky
Purple haze all around
Don't know if I'm comin' up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
What ever it is, that girl put a spell on me
Help me
Help me
Oh, no, no
Hammerin'
Talkin' 'bout heart 'n'...s-soul
I'm talkin' about hard stuff
If everbodys still around, fluff and ease, if
So far out my mind
Somethings happening, somethings happening
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh,
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh, yeah!
Purple haze all in my eyes, uhh
Don't know if its day or night
You got me blowin', blowin' my mind
Is it tomorrow, or just the end of time?
Ooo
Help me
Ahh, yea-yeah, purple haze, yeah
Oh, no, oh
Oh, help me
Purple haze, Tell me, baby, tell me
I can't go on like this
Purple haze
You're makin' me blow my mind...mama

Purple haze, n-no, nooo
Purple haze, no, its painful, baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nappy Roots' song "Purple Haze" are initially focused on describing the effect of the eponymous substance on the singer. The haze seems to have taken over their whole self, clouding their brain and making them feel different, while at the same time being unable to specify why they are acting funny. In the middle of the song, the lyrics shift to a request for help, possibly indicating that the drug is having a detrimental effect on the singer's mental and emotional well-being. The final lines of the song reflect the pain and struggle the singer is experiencing due to the potency of the drug and the hold it seems to have on them.

However, the interpretation of "Purple Haze" may extend beyond the drug-induced experience of the singer. The repeated reference to an unknown "girl" that has put a spell on them suggests that the haze could be a metaphor for infatuation or even addiction. The lyrics could be read as describing the singer's frustration with the depth of their feelings for the girl, and their inability to understand or control them.

Overall, "Purple Haze" is a song that captures the disorienting and surreal experience of being under the influence of a powerful substance, while also hinting at the emotional turmoil that can accompany obsession or addiction.

A bit of history to the riff in the song. As others have mentioned, it's from April Spring Summer & Wednesdays by Status Quo. But the connections to Groove Armada are more than just the song. Bob Young was their mgr/tour mgr and he was Status Quo 6th member, he co -wrote April Spring along with numerous Quo hits, Caroline, Down Down etc, played harmonica on stage and was their tour mgr until the early 80s. April spring comes from Ma Kellys Greasy Spoon, an album the guys in GA had in their top 10 albums in GQ magazine. It is a classic, and not what you expect form Qup. April Spring is grunge 20 years before Nirvana.
