Groove Collective's impressive history began in the early 1990's as they fueled the growth of New York City's acid-jazz scene. They quickly became a staple of a budding underground club scene known for pairing DJs with live performers. This groundbreaking enterprise was run under the media and event production mogul that would eventually become Giant Step. Groove Collective crafted and popularized the fusion of jazz and funk, pioneering what is now referred to globally as "groove" music. Miles gave genuine advice. There are millions of amateur musicians out there who sound ok, but not great. A musician can hear the quality of their sound and honesty with themself will inform what practice is needed. He then told the kid a specific tip to guide - play Eb. You’re playing D, transcribe all the notes to Eb (1/2 step higher). The kid looked at the page to remember if it’s written in D. Miles knows this is standard, and is telling him to KNOW the music so intimately you can play it 1/2 step higher than written. EXCELLENT practice technique to truly grasp the music and play musically, rather than simply what you’re told on the page. Musician to musician, this honest feedback is invaluable from legends like Miles Davis. If Miles was polite, he would have shorted the kid of a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the approach from someone who truly knows music.

bird, bud, all of them even chad LB( from our time) is known for practicing standards in many keys and going through them in as many keys as possible, thing is that takes fucking time slowing everything down really ,so you can really learn it until it is soaked in, and then you have fun.
it works, if you practice any concept for a week or more, you will remember it more and will be able to make music with it, once learned, limitation is key and knowing what you're doing goes without saying

When I was a freshman in highschool, Ron Carter (the sax player, not the bass player) said I sucked straight to my face in front of the whole jazz band. A few years later Denis Diblasio said the same thing. I don't love this tactic, but it's pretty effective. It got me to practice harder. I think that's what Miles was going for here too

Whatever Miles Davis was like as a human being, if he gave advice on playing the trumpet, it did not matter how he delivered that advice. You oughta listen and be glad for it.

“He knows how he sounds” is just a really honest and respectful commentary. He’s not trying to be savage, he could tell the kid’s confidence, conviction, (etc) by reading him while playing.
And Miles even helped direct the kid about the key and his note range

As far as I know the key Eb is actually easier to play on a trumpet than D natural, and suits the instrument much better also sound wise. One of the reasons is that the trumpet itself is tuned in Bb. So I think that Miles actually was giving a good advice and did try to help

Miles wasnt mean or anything. He knows the kid knows shedding is a lonely journey that takes a lot of self reflection and honesty to oneself. Sure, Miles can be a bitter asshole with other adults but this was an honest response to the child. A child who decides to pursue jazz shouldnt be lied to about the kind of dedication and hardwork it will take. It dont matter if its bop, trad, modal, swing or “modern”. All of it takes so much honest discipline. He did the kid a service by tellin the truth instead of “good job. Your shit don’t stink”.

Comments like that can be really hard to take as a new player looking for a comment to highlight their strengths. Hopefully this kid had a louder internal voice encouraging him than miles’ comment. There’s a way to encourage a younger player whilst pointing out areas that need improvement and unfortunately this was not a good example of that

I can tell from the comment section that for a lot of you, people were simply mean to you all when growning up and so you all think being mean to children is the solution. He actually didn't offer that young man any advice other than telling him to play the song in a different key. That's not real advice. That was simply him sharing his subjective opinion on what would make the song sound better.

I don't think he was harsh. He was just being honest, he wasn't rude toward him. It's just that Miles rarely sounded very pleasent and he had that reserved behaviour so he serms rude. But he's not, he's just given him a simple advice.

BUT to me Miles didnt say nothing harsh or bad, to me hes treating the kid as he treats every musician, face to face full honesty, with actual constructive criticism and suggestions to improve, its best to be yourself and to talk straight up honestly and risk being harsh, than to try to embellish your words and/or sugarcoat your criticism and end up sounding false, twofaced or passive agressive, which is something i went through, i learned by experience, not much since im still 25, but still, i had middle school, high school, and almost an entire college course to bruteforce my shy a ss to deal with other people.
He didnt even raise his voice, ik he had some other moments but in this specific one, all i see is a smart genius grandpa giving a kid actual advice to where he can improve, and all times i had this in my life was a blessing.

He dodnt just say "he needs to practices" he also said "play it in eb"
