Strangers of the Heart
Groove for Thought Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As you vibe for no reason at all
I think I used to know you
But I haven't seen you in a while
Just another ghost in the hole
We're strangers of the heart
Grown apart
We're strangers of the heart
I don't remember
Don't recognize you at all
I think I used to love you (I think I used to love you)
Oh once upon a time
But fairytales they are only for the young
And that's not what we are
We're strangers of the heart
No that's not what we are
We're strangers of the heart
We're pirates of our thoughtful dreams
No one cares and
No one seems to understand my new obsession
Answer this crazy question
Do I know you from somewhere
I know I do, this I could swear
Do you recognize my face
Will you take me from this place
Da day da day doh day ya doh da
Do day e doh yla lo da
Do deh de do do deh de do do

Did I forget from hurting
Did we commit some crime
Do you remember me?
I know you from somewhere (I know you from somewhere)
I know you from somewhere (ow, o-o-ow)
Did we need a fresher start
Is that why we're strangers of the heart
Did we need a fresher start

Theres a reason (maybe there is, maybe)
Maybe
It's by design
Wrapped in the reflection (oo)
My heart is longing for (oo)
New times are hard
But there what we're driving towards
It's a crueler kind of art (crueler kind of art)
What it's done to my heart (do do)

The song "Strangers of the Heart" by Groove for Thought is about two people who used to know each other but who have grown apart over time. The singer expresses surprise and confusion upon seeing the other person again, feeling like a stranger, but with the sense that they've had a connection in the past. She might have once loved him, but they are no longer in a fairytale and are now grown apart. The song is about nostalgia and the feeling of uncertainty as the singer is trying to reconnect with someone that used to be significant in her life.
The lyrics talk about the uncertainty of not recognizing someone you once knew, and the feeling of being strangers of the heart. The uncertainty is such that the singer wonders if they had committed a crime to forget each other and whether they need a fresher start. The song implies that sometimes two people can grow apart and become strangers even though they have a past. The lines "These strangers of the heart, it's a classic work of art" reflect the bittersweet nature of feeling nostalgic for something that was once cherished but is now over.

Amazing performance last night in Stevenson! So great to see you live - my wife, Susan (Herzog) was in heaven listening to your music and remember her High School days in Jazz Choir under Kelly's dad - even performed some of Kelly's early arrangements.

Thanks for listening, Amanda. I have to say that I've listened to a LOT of vocal groups, Take 6, NYV, The Transfer, Banda de Boca, LH&R, Rare Silk, Hi Lo's, Quire, Swingles, Double Six, but you guys are really special! I've listened to your version of "Human Nature" several times and it is absolutely astounding! I don't know if I've ever heard such a beautiful and well executed vocal arrangement! The precision, the imaginativeness, the groove, the power, the emotion are beyond words.
