Earth Is Not Room Enough
Groundhogs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Locked in a room, strapped to a hollow chair
Faint musty smell, odor of stale air
Sealed from the outside in a cage that is six-foot square
Eyes that are fixed in a glazed disbelieving stare

Cyanide pills dropped in an acid bath
Froth forms a cloud as deadly as death's own staff
Lungs start to burst trying to hold your breath
But have the last laugh 'cause Earth is just a cage

Seven thousand miles wide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Groundhogs' song "Earth Is Not Room Enough" are thought-provoking and unnerving. The first verse paints a picture of being locked in a room, strapped to a hollow chair, with a faint musty smell and a sense of being sealed off from the outside world in a cage that's only six-foot square. The imagery is intensely claustrophobic but also suggests a feeling of being trapped not just physically, but also mentally or emotionally. The glazed and disbelieving stare suggests a deep despair or hopelessness that comes from feeling powerless and confined.

The second verse takes an even darker turn, as the singer describes cyanide pills being dropped in an acid bath, creating a deadly froth that causes lungs to burst in an attempt to hold one's breath. The overall effect is harrowing, but the line about "having the last laugh" suggests that perhaps the singer has found a way to reclaim some sense of control or autonomy in the midst of this confinement. The final line, "Earth is just a cage seven thousand miles wide," is a bleak and despairing statement of existential nihilism, suggesting that there is no escape from the inherent limitations and restrictions of being alive.

Overall, the lyrics to "Earth Is Not Room Enough" are haunting and enigmatic, leaving much open to interpretation. The song's title suggests a thematic concern with being limited or confined in some way, whether physically or psychologically, and the lyrics explore these themes with a visceral intensity that is both unsettling and compelling.

Ashamed to admit I'd never heard the Groundhogs. These guys are freaking awesome. Somehow familiar and yet somehow off in a world of their own.

Willie Gilbert

Jim Shelley have ya looked further with Groundhog?

Not heard this since 30 years... yet can still remember sing and desk-drum along to it. Sure sign of a rock classic.

That's perhaps my favorite song on that album. It's spacey, yet it jumps at you demanding full attention!

One of the great bands off the 60s and 70s just brilliant. 😚

Wow! Does this bring back the memories. For those who love the "electronic" sound the Hogs brought in with this effort I highly recommend "The Hunt" from his solo album "The two sides of Tony McPhee". A brilliant and profound piece of progressive rock. A 19 minute plus effort that is simply staggering.
