Status People
Groundhogs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I closed my front door today I won't be opening it up for a while,
I left the key with friends I said "make yourself at home and live in style",
All I had was a set of clothes that would have to last for quite a long time,
I'm leaving now all the brass and silver can collect some grime.

My money in the bank I'll give most away to friends and servants who will lose their pay,
They can be rich for a short time, realise some ambitions and start to climb,
Ill be glad to say goodbye to status people who are just a lie,
I left them behind when I walked out the door, I'll never see them anymore.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Groundhogs' song Status People describe the singer's decision to leave behind their lavish lifestyle and material possessions. The song deals with themes of social status, the pursuit of wealth, and the emptiness of material possessions. The singer decides to leave behind their home, money, and status symbols and gives most of their money away to friends and servants who have lost their pay. They express a sense of relief at leaving behind the superficial and dishonest "status people" who they will never see again.

The first two lines signify the beginning of a journey that necessitates leaving everything familiar behind. The singer has made the decision to leave, to give up their comfortable life of status and possessions. They leave behind everything they possess except for the clothes on their back. The line "I'm leaving now all the brass and silver can collect some grime" is particularly poignant as it highlights the fact that the brass and silver are just objects, they are not the purpose of life, and that they will gather dust like any other object once their owner has gone.

The second stanza talks about the singer giving away most of their money to friends and servants, and their willingness to help these people realise some of their ambitions. This gesture highlights their generosity and kindness, and perhaps the emptiness of their wealth that they are willing to give it away so easily. The lyric "I'll be glad to say goodbye to status people who are just a lie" underscores the deceitful nature of status symbols and how they can be used to deceive others.

Overall, the song Status People is a powerful commentary on the role of material possessions in society and the pitfalls of pursuing wealth over other things in life. It is a reminder that sometimes it is necessary to leave behind the superficial and false to find true happiness.
