Cruel and Beautiful World
Grouplove Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go ahead and close the door
I'll stand outside in the rain
A little bird just told me so
It's time to start over again

So I'll run out and take this boat
Far away from these shores
And I'll reach behind an enemy line
And find my curable cure

Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world
And I got my girl
And if it seems like we're falling behind
Or just slipping on top from the mouths of our mind

I buried a treasure
Far off near the desert

I'm trying to find my way there
It's been too long since I've been myself
And my eyes can't see anymore

And there's a song inside of this hard of mind
And I'd like to sing it to you
Cause there's an earthquake shaking inside my country
Now what am I gonna do?

Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world
And I got my girl
And if it seems like we're falling behind
Or just slipping on top from the mouth of our mind (hey)

Cause it's a cruel and beautiful world (cruel and beautiful world)
And I got my girl (he's got his girl)

And if it seems like we're falling behind (seems like we're falling behind)
Or just slipping on top from the mouth of our mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cruel and Beautiful World" by Grouplove are both melancholic and hopeful. The song tells a story of someone who is trying to find their way back to themselves after a long period of feeling lost. The first verse suggests that the singer is ready to leave behind what they know and start over again. They seem to be looking for a fresh start, a new beginning. However, despite their willingness to move forward, they are still feeling lost and unsure of themselves.

As the song progresses, we learn that the singer is trying to find their way back to a sense of self one step at a time. They've buried a treasure far off in the desert, which could represent a metaphorical or even literal treasure – something of personal value that the singer needs to retrieve in order to feel whole again. However, getting there is not easy; the singer seems to be struggling with memory loss or feeling disconnected from themselves in some way. Yet, they still have hope and a strong connection to their partner, the "girl" that they mention, who seems to be a source of emotional support throughout their journey.

Ultimately, the song is about the duality of the world we live in. It's both "cruel and beautiful," a place where we can experience immense pain and profound love. With the help of loved ones and a willingness to persevere, the singer seems to be finding their way back to a sense of self and a place of inner peace.

There are a lot of reasons that I am thankful that I began watching Chuck, but one of the biggest reasons is the fabulous music I discovered through that show. It has, in many ways, provided the soundtrack for my life in college. I am currently a Junior and the past three years have been filled with the sounds of Bon Iver, Nico Stai, and Band of Horses, among others. This is another fantastic song that will now be added to that life changing playlist.

Love Chuck. At first I didn't like the season finale all that much. I watched it again. It's perfect.

the finale of Chuck was just perfect. PERFECT. a final performance from Jeffster, super nostalgic scenes from season 1, and great music from The Black Keys and Grouplove etc.
