The band consists of Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keyboards), Andrew Wessen (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), and Ryan Rabin (drums). The band released their debut album, Never Trust a Happy Song, in September 2011, which was followed by Spreading Rumours, released September 2013. Both albums were produced by the band's drummer Ryan Rabin, who is the son of former Yes guitarist and film composer Trevor Rabin.
Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection, Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists "without any hesitation" she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. "Seriously, we had only known one another for a few days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and natural thing to do," recalls Zucconi.
On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band a year before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born in London instantly bonded with the two New Yorkers. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These five musicians make up the members of what we now know as GROUPLOVE .
Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes all over the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los Angeles GROUPLOVE was faced with the challenge of what to do now. "We all understood how rare it is for five strangers to feel as close as family and create passionate music together. We couldn't just return to Brooklyn and let the music we all made fade into a memory of that summer we had in Greece," explained Zucconi.
Everyone pulled their funds together and Sean, Christian and Hannah made their way to Ryan Rabin's studio in LA to record their album. "We seriously had the best time of our lives doing that record," says Gadd. And the result is an incredibly special album where soaring harmonies coupled with sweeping anthems lead you through their powerful journey. Like the members of GROUPLOVE, their music is diverse in influence and style but bonded together by an undeniably creative kinship.
Their experience back together and recording together was so potent that Hooper and Zucconi packed up their lives in Brooklyn and Gadd packed up his life in London and they all moved to LA to live and play their music. "We never could have dreamt this up," says Zucconi, "but at the same time we're not at all surprised - GROUPLOVE is meant to be."
GROUPLOVE is perhaps best known for their 2012 single "Tongue Tied", which peaked within the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 and received quintuple platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Tongue Tied followed the re-release of their debut EP, Grouplove in 2011.
The band released its debut album, Never Trust a Happy Song, on September 13, 2011, through Canvasback/Atlantic Records. Two years later, on September 17, 2013, Grouplove's second album, Spreading Rumours, was released. In June 2014, Sean Gadd announced he had left the band, which was confirmed in a post on the band's website.
In 2014, GROUPLOVE released I'm With You, a short form tour documentary about the band. The documentary featured performances from the New York Seesaw Tour shows and was released by Atlantic. Atlantic also released a digital album of six songs performed live on the tour. In April 2015 the band released their second EP, Under the Covers.
GROUPLOVE released their third studio album, Big Mess, on September 9, 2016. On July 15, 2016, the band released the lead single from the album, “Welcome to Your Life". On April 22, 2017, Grouplove released an EP titled Little Mess. The EP was an extension of their full-length album Big Mess.
On January 8, 2020, GROUPLOVE released the single "Deleter", announcing it would be the lead single off of an upcoming fourth album, Healer, to be released in March 2020. On the album Benjamin Homola was listed as the band's new drummer, replacing Rabin who had previously announced he no longer wanted to tour.
A year later, GROUPLOVE released the single "Deadline" with a music video. They also announced that their fifth studio album, This Is This, would be released on March 12, 2021. In 2023 the band announced that their sixth album, I Want It All Right Now, would be released on July 7, 2023.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
It's primetime, baby
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Crawling back to Caesar
One way or the other now
I'm tripping on the freewayI'm tryna roll my windows down
It's primetime, baby, ha
I'm gonna, I'm gonna eat you
It's primetime, baby, ha
I'm gonna, I'm gonna kill you (gonna kill you)
Be like all the others
I'm folding like the sailor seas
Give me back my own time
Hold him here in place of me
It's primetime, baby
It's primetime, baby
I'm gonna eat you
I'm gonna kill you
It's primetime, baby
It's primetime, baby
It's primetime, baby
It's primetime, baby
It's primetime, baby, ha
I'm gonna, I'm gonna eat you
It's primetime, baby, ha
I'm gonna, I'm gonna kill you
It's primetime, baby, ha
The opening lyrics of Grouplove's "Primetime" establish the energetic and upbeat tone of the song, with the repeated phrase "It's primetime, baby" punctuated with infectious laughter. As the song progresses, the lyrics become more mysterious and enigmatic, with references to "Crawling back to Caesar" and "folding like the sailor seas." These lines suggest the singer is feeling overwhelmed and perhaps even defeated by something larger and more powerful than themselves.
The next lines suggest the singer is in some sort of vehicle, "tripping on the freeway" and trying to "roll my windows down." This could symbolize a desire to escape or find some sort of release from whatever is oppressing them. The chorus is repeated throughout the song, with the singer declaring their intention to "eat" or "kill" someone or something, perhaps a metaphor for the desire to conquer or overcome challenges in their life.
Overall, the lyrics of "Primetime" are somewhat abstract and open to interpretation, but the song's driving beat and catchy chorus make it a fun and energetic listen.
