Wasting Time
Gufs The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What kind of fool would treat you like he does
What kind of man would answer with because
So here I am alone and in between
So here I am
What kind of fool would trip across this line
What kind of man would leave his soul behind
To hear her say the words she doesn't mean
To hear her say those lies
She falls into the waters edge
We call to say she's wasting time
What kind of fool would throw you to the ground
What kind of man would lose what he has found
So here we are alone until the end
So here we are
I want to know
I wonder who you are
I want to find out
What you're after
Hearing your voice
Hearing those lies again

Watching you fall
What the f**k went wrong

Overall Meaning

In "Wasting Time," Gufs The's singer is expressing frustration at the way an unnamed woman is being treated by her lover ("What kind of fool would treat you like he does"). He recognizes that she is being lied to ("To hear her say the words she doesn't mean / To hear her say those lies"), and wonders why she continues to put up with it ("What kind of fool would trip across this line"). He also questions the character of the man who is mistreating her ("What kind of man would answer with because"), and laments that he is stuck in the middle of this dysfunctional relationship ("So here I am alone and in between"). The singer concludes the song with a sense of longing and confusion - he wants to know more about this woman and what she's after, but he can't help but feel like everything is falling apart ("Watching you fall / What the f**k went wrong").

One of the interesting things about "Wasting Time" is that it was originally released by the Gufs in 1992, but it gained new life when a cover version by the Canadian band Default became a hit in 2004. Another fun fact is that Gufs The is an anagram of "The Gufs," which was the name of the band before they split up in 2002. Additionally, some fans have speculated that the song might be about the band's lead singer, Goran Kralj, and his wife going through a rough patch in their marriage.
